Wyckoff January 9, 2013 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 5 Three arrested after armed robbery attempt by John Koster Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox reported that three arrests have been made, and a bullet and a firearm have been recovered following an attempted armed robbery at the Calvin Court residence of a local business owner. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Department’s ballistics team recovered the slug from an attic beam above the ceiling of the house. The discarded .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver was found near the scene with a live round in the cylinder. Police reported that, at 11:20 p.m. on Dec. 28, the homeowner was confronted in his driveway by two men, one of whom had a handgun. The would-be robbers demanded money, and, at some point, a shot was fired. No one was hit, and the two men fled without taking anything. Wyckoff police put out a call when they heard about the shooting, and Midland Park Patrolman Noah VanVliet stopped a vehicle on Cedar Hill Avenue with two men from Paterson and an 18-year-old woman from North Haledon, reportedly an employee of the Wyckoff businessman’s pizza shop. The three were first charged with possession of marijuana. After further investigation, they were charged with first degree robbery, arraigned before Judge Russell Teschon, and lodged in Bergen County Jail with bail set at $100,000 each. Information from one of the suspects led to the discovery of the gun. The bullet recovered from the attic after it passed through a bedroom window and the interior ceiling could have inflicted a fatal injury, but the room was vacant at the time. “It’s extremely fortunate that there was no death or serious bodily injury as a result of this careless act during a violent crime,” said Chief Fox. Police were not sure which of the three suspects fired the gun. Investigation showed, however, that the woman had dropped off the two men near the Calvin Court house and that they waited for the restaurant owner and waylaid him. Police said the woman then picked up the two men and they all fled in the same car, but were quickly stopped and arrested. Officers who took part in the investi- gation were Wyckoff Sergeant Michael Ragucci, Sergeant Brian Zivkovich, and Patrolman Michael DeMaio, the officer who first responded to the house where the gunshot was heard. Other Wyckoff officers included Lieutenant David Murphy and Detective Sergeant Joseph Soto. Fox also expressed his thanks to the Midland Park, Franklin Lakes, Ho-Ho-Kus, and Ridgewood police and the Bergen County Police K-9 unit and detectives for their assistance.
