Soccer association reorganizes The Midland Park Soccer Association will hold its annual reorganization meeting on Monday, Jan. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Midland Park Library. Families with children in the recreation and travel leagues of the MPSA are invited to attend. The agenda will include updating bylaws and planning for the fall 2013 season. Sociologist to address bullying Dr. Paula Rodriguez-Rust, a sociologist and diversity educator, will offer a presentation about harassment, intimidation, and bullying. The program will be held Jan. 24 in Memorial Hall at Midland Park High School, 250 Prospect Street. The speaker will present the results of the 2011 and 2012 school climate surveys from students in grades two through 12, and will review the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Law. The program will run from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and all are invited. Continuing education offers trips & tours Midland Park Continuing Education is offering a variety of trips and courses for adults and youths this spring and summer. Residents of Midland Park and the surrounding communities are welcome to attend. Day trips are planned to the Philadelphia Flower Show on March 3, Villa Roma Caesar’s Extravaganza on April 16, a QVC Tour on April 26, a World Trade Center visit on May 7, Tulip Time in Albany on May 11, and All Around Central Park on May 18. Theater enthusiasts may see “Jersey Boys” at 7 p.m. on March 21, “Wicked” on April 16 at 7 p.m., and “Spider-Man” on April 24 at 7:30 p.m. Overnight tours include a nine-day Alaska trip from May 24 to June 1, a trip to Ocean City and the Eastern Shore in Maryland from May 20 through 23, a trip to Niagara Falls and Toronto from June 3 through 7, and a tour of Chicago from Aug. 18 through 24. Register for baseball The Midland Park Baseball Association is now accepting applications for the 2013 season for its recreation league. Applications, due Jan. 15 may be found at www.leaguelineup.com/ mpba. Winter Reading Program slated The Midland Park Memorial Library will host two Winter Reading Clubs for borough children. One program is for children ages two through six, and the other is for those in grades one through six. The clubs are intended to promote lit-
eracy and a love of reading. Children are invited to sign up now at the library. Registration will run through Jan. 11. Participants will receive a reading log to keep track of the books they read or have read to them by a family member or caregiver. For every five books listed, their name will be entered into a contest. The program will end Feb. 8. On Monday, Feb. 11, the library staff will select three winners from each club, including two runners-up and one grand prize winner. Ministry seeks ‘pillowcase’ dressmakers On Jan. 23, the Midland Park Christian Reformed Church will present a demonstration on making pillowcase dresses for its Africa ministry. The program will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Friendship Hall, 183 Godwin Avenue. The church’s ministry is “changing lives one little dress at time” by making these dresses for children in Africa. The demonstration includes four easy steps and requires only a new pillowcase, elastic for casing, bias tape, and thread. Directions will be provided for each person to take home. Donations of $2 are requested for shipping. The ministry will announce a date in February for a potluck dinner and a display of the dresses destined for the children in Africa. Groups present ‘15-Minute Child Break’ The Midland Park Alliance and the Midland Park Elementary Schools PTA will host the Partnership for a DrugFree New Jersey’s 15-Minute Child Break program on Jan.
17. This one-hour program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Highland School gym at 31 Highland Avenue. The 15-Minute Child Break is a multi-media presentation that provides information on the importance of the parent or caregiver’s role in substance abuse prevention. Discussions will include how to talk to children about drugs, signs of use and abuse, and current terminology and trends. PAPS group hosts contest The Midland Park High School Performing Arts Parents, also known as PAPS, is conducting a fundraiser to benefit the 2013 musical, “Legally Blonde.” Tickets for the fundraiser are $5 each. The fundraiser includes three prizes. First prize is an iPad mini valued at $329. Second prize is Beats Solo by Dr. Dre Headphones valued at $200. Third prize is a 19” LCD HD TV valued at $150. Only 1,000 tickets will be sold. Winners will be announced on Jan. 15, 2013 and participants need not be present to be eligible. PAPs is dedicated to enriching the experience of the arts for Midland Park middle and high school students, including those participating in band, chorus, theater, and broadcasting. “Legally Blonde” will be performed on March 22, 23, and 24.
