The Academic Decathlon teams from Ramapo and Indian Hills high schools recently placed third and second, respectively, in the regional competition. Both teams will now advance to the state finals that will be held March 2 at Morris Knolls High School. In the Super Quiz event, Indian Hills earned a gold medal for the highest score in Region 2. Kevin Zellers was named Most Valuable Player for the Ramapo team, and John Borst was MVP for the Indian Hills team. The highest scoring decathletes for Indian Hills included Neha Gupta, honors level; Paul Park, scholastic level; and Stephanie Oldano, varsity level. For the Ramapo team, the highest scoring decathletes were Kevin Zellers, honors; Alexander Murgio, scholastic; and Rachel Maryash, varsity. Three Indian Hills students were recognized for earning the distinction of Overall Highest Scoring Decathlete based on 10 events at their level. For the varsity level, Nick Macalle took the bronze medal and Stephanie Oldano, earned a gold medal. On the scholastic level, Paul Park garnered a gold medal. The board of trustees of the Academic Decathlon of New Jersey awarded each gold medalist a $500 scholarship. In Region 2, those scholarships were awarded to Stephanie Oldano and Paul Park. Rachel Maryash had the highest scoring prepared speech and was invited to present her speech at the recent awards program. The following regular team decathletes earned individual awards and recognition from the Indian Hills team: Junior Neha Gupta received a gold medal in art, silver medals in social science and speech, bronze medal in economics, and honorable mention in interview. Jesse Mangold received a gold medal in music and honorable mention in social science, science, art, and language and literature. Evan Cypher won a gold medal in interview. math. Park also won a silver medal in social science, a bronze medal in essay, and honorable mention in science. Peter Park won a silver medal in math and bronze medals in economics, and language and literature. Christian Dietz earned a silver medal in economics and essay, and honorable mention in science and language and literature. Stephanie Oldano won a gold medal in art, and silver medals in speech and interview. John Borst received a gold medal in language and literature, bronze medals in economics and math, and honorable mention in science. Nick Macalle earned a gold medal in social science, and silver medals in art, music, and essay. Macalle also won bronze medals in economics and interview. The alternate decathletes at Indian Hills who earned individual awards and recognition were: Carter Vilim with a gold in art and a bronze in science; Markos El-Far, gold in art and math, silver in science and economics, and bronze in social science; Joseph Quinlan, gold in economics and silver in language and literature; Karina Rahaman, silver in art and language and literature, and a bronze in economics; and Kelly Ann Buccisano, gold in art. KwangJin Choi received a silver medal in art and honorable mention in social science. Alexander Murgio garnered a gold medal in music, a silver medal in math, and honorable mentions in art, economics, and speech. Zachary Belohoubek earned honorable mention in science and essay. Rachel Maryash took a gold medal in speech and essay and earned honorable mention in music and in language and literature. Anna Pokrovsky took a bronze medal in speech and honorable mention in art, music, economics, and language and literature. Ibrahim Elshahawi won a gold medal in science and a bronze in music. Alternate decathletes from Ramapo who earned individual awards and recognition are: Timothy Sander, gold in science and math and silver in social science and music; Charles Verhoog, gold in science and economics; and Alyssa Harris, gold in language and literature and math. This year, along with the decathlon team awards, Coach Meredith Noah was honored for 15 years of dedicated service.
The Ramapo High School Class of 2013 will present “Ramapo Runway: It’s a Wrap” on Wednesday, March 20. This fashion show will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Brownstone, 351 West Broadway in Paterson. The event includes a sit down dinner, cash bar, entertainment, and a prize basket fundraiser. The senior students will entertain with songs from movies and model prom fashions. Proceeds benefit Project Graduation for all grade levels.
Ramapo Runway benefit announced
Project Graduation is a school- and parent-sponsored event that provides a drug- and alcohol-free environment for the senior class to celebrate following graduation.
