Scholarship applicants sought Applications for the New Jersey League of Municipalities Louis Bay II Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship applications are now available. This scholarship opportunity is open to high school juniors and seniors throughout New Jersey. Applicants will write an essay of 500 words on “What My Mayor and Governing Body Do Best.” The essay should focus on the virtues of elected and volunteer positions in municipal government while raising awareness of municipal government in general. Students interested in applying for the scholarship should contact the municipal clerks in their towns for an application. Applications and essays are due on or before March 8. Statewide finalists and winners will be announced by the League of Municipalities on May 3. Babysitters invited to class The Valley Hospital Center for Family Education will host Babysitters Preparation on Wednesday, March 13 from 4 to 6 p.m. This class gives caregivers the information they need to safely care for a child. Topics to be presented include feeding, holding, and changing a baby; infant safety concerns; and where and how to contact the police, parents, pediatrician, poison control centers, and other emergency personnel. The fee for this two-hour course is $35 per person. Wyckoff Y offers two opera events The Wyckoff Y is offering two March events for opera lovers. On Wednesday, March 6, see an encore presentation of “Verdi’s Rigoletto” in HD at the AMC Theater at Garden State Plaza. Director Michael Mayer has placed his new production of Verdi’s towering tragedy in Las Vegas in 1960. Piotr Beczala is the womanizing Duke, Zeljko Lucic is his tragic sidekick Rigoletto, and Diana Damrau is Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda. The show is three hours and 31 minutes. The bus will depart from the Y at 4:30 p.m. for the 6:30 p.m. show. Tickets are $25 for Y members and $28 for nonmembers. For more information, call (201) 891-2081. On Sunday, March 10, enjoy “Beloved Opera Treasures and Desserts from Around the World” at the Y’s Carl Pfeifer Performing Arts Center. The 2 p.m. show will feature German, Italian, Czech, Russian, and French opera favorites with artists Josh Benevento (Metropolitan Opera Finalist), Adelmo Guidarelli, Reegan McKenzie (Metropolitan Opera Finalist), Alexis Rodda (Metropolitan Opera Finalist), and Jacquelyn Karl. Paul S. Bryan, AIA, an associate architect with LAN Associates in Midland Park, recently received the Vegliante Memorial Award from the Architects League of Northern New Jersey. This award is the highest accolade that can be bestowed upon a member. Architects League Past President Joyce Raspa, AIA, Esq., presented the award to Bryan for his achievements, accomplishments, and distinguished service to his profession. Bryan has been a member of the league since 1997 and currently serves as first vice president. Blood Drive scheduled Community Blood Services and Weichert Realtors in Ramsey will host a Blood Drive on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 5 South Franklin Turnpike in Ramsey. Any healthy individual age 17 through 75 and weighing at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Donors should eat a moderate meal before donating and must bring identification showing signature. All donors receive a complimentary cholesterol screening with every blood donation. Art auction announced The North Haledon Education Foundation will host its Eighteenth Annual Art Auction on Friday, March 22. The event, presented by Marlin Art, Inc., will be held at the North Haledon Firehouse at 568 High Mountain Road in North Haledon. The preview will start at 7 p.m. and will be followed by the auction at 8 p.m. The preview will include music and a buffet style dinner. Tickets are $15 per person or for $25 for two.
