Filing deadline for school board candidates nears Candidates for the Midland Park Board of Education are reminded the deadline for filing to have their name on the ballot for the annual school board election is 4 p.m. on Feb. 25. The election is set for April 16. For more details call the board office at (201) 444-1400. Prospective school board candidates can obtain a School Board Candidate Kit or online a www.njsba.org/candidacy. The kit includes a sample nominating petition, information about the legal qualifications for school board candidacy, and the role of the school board member. Information about the New Jersey Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process are also included.
Spring registration extended The Midland Park Baseball Association has extended its registration for the spring 2013 recreation season through Feb. 28. MPHS announces Good Samaritan Awards Midland Park High School has announced its Good Samaritan Award recipients for January. Students and staff were recognized for their volunteer efforts in Lavallette after Hurricane Sandy, helping peers, contributing in class, and being respectful toward others. The following individuals were honored for their caring, responsible, and respectful acts of kindness: Chris Ferrante, Arie Zuidema, Tyler Halliwell, Andrew Vassallo, John House, Amanda Parker, Danielle Granuzzo, Olivia Fairless, and teacher Mrs. DeRitter. Thrift shop reopens The Community Thrift Shop, located on the lower level of the Midland Park Shopping Center at 85 Godwin Avenue, has reopened for the winter season. The shop is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The shop accepts donations on Mondays and on the first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shop features nearly new brand name clothing, jewelry, bric-a-brac, toys, and more. Pool Time Billiards in Midland Park will host a Feb. 23 fundraiser to benefit Elaine Mejury Mazurek, who is battling cancer. The fundraiser will begin at 6 p.m. Supporters are invited to play unlimited billiards for $25, based on table availability. There will be a billiards tournament at 8 p.m. The entrance fee is $20 and sign up will close at 7:30 p.m. Mazurek grew up in Midland Park, attended the borough’s public schools, and was a member of the Midland Park softball, soccer, and basketball teams. She continued to play throughout college. Mazurek is now married and has a young daughter. Currently, she is engaged in a two front battle with cancer with the addition of brain cancer to her original diagnosis of breast cancer. Baked goods and beverages will be for sale during the fundraiser. The event is BYOB. Donations may be made payable to Pool Time Billiards or Elaine Mejury Mazurek. The billiards hall is located at 24 Central Avenue in Midland Park.
