It’s Souper Bowl Time Midland Park Girl Scouts are seeking donations of canned soup for the annual Souper Bowl event, which benefits the Center for Food Action in Mahwah. Donations will be accepted through Feb. 8. Collection boxes are located at Highland School at 31 Highland Avenue, Godwin School at 41 East Center Street, and the Midland Park Public Library at 250 Godwin Avenue. Mid-Winter Mini-Camp available The Midland Park Continuing Education Program is sponsoring a four day Mid-Winter Mini-Camp for children in kindergarten through grade six. The program will run from Feb. 19 through 22 at Midland Park High School, located at 250 Prospect Street. Programs are available in full- and half-day sessions. Children may participate in arts & crafts, music, games, puzzles, board games, literature, movies, and other activities. Outdoor physical activities will be on the agenda, weather permitting. Blue Jean Ball date announced The Midland Park Public Education Foundation’s annual Blue Jean Ball will be held on Saturday, April 13 at Saint Leon’s Armenian Church in Fair Lawn. The event will benefit the foundation’s mission to enhance and support new curriculum initiatives and enrichment opportunities within Midland Park’s public school system. Men’s basketball league forming On Feb. 26 at 8 p.m., Midland Park Continuing Education will hold a meeting for its Over 21 Men’s Basketball League. The league will play at Midland Park High School beginning March 5. The fee is $795 for a team of up to 10 players. A $200 deposit is required upon registration. The registration cost includes T-shirts, referee fees, timer fees, schedules, and awards. A team gift card to Allendale Bar & Grill will be
awarded to the winning team. Teams that refer new teams to the leagues will receive a $100 discount for each referred team that joins the league. Holocaust Education fundraiser On Feb. 13, the Blue Moon Mexican Café in Boulder Run Shopping Center in Wyckoff will sponsor a Community Night fundraiser for the Holocaust Education Program at Midland Park High School. The restaurant will donate 20 percent of all lunch, dinner, take out, or delivery. To participate, present a Blue Moon Community Night flyer from the BlueMoonMexicanCafe.com website. Click on the community tab, then click Community Nights, and scroll down to Holocaust Education Program. Library hosts programs for children The Midland Park Library will hold Story Time sessions for young residents. Sessions will be held at 10:30 a.m. Children who are two and three will meet on Thursdays beginning Feb. 21. Children who are four through six will meet on Tuesdays beginning Feb. 19. Patrons may sign up
in person or by calling (201) 444-2390. Baby Time for children ages six through 24 months and their caregivers will meet on Wednesdays, Feb. 20 and 27 and March 6 and 13. The program will run 30 minutes and include stories, music, and rhymes, and free playtime. This program does not require registration. Children of all ages are welcome to a drop-in Valentine’s Day craft on Feb. 5 and 12 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Wednesday, Feb. 20, the library will show a children’s movie at 1 p.m. No registration necessary. Children under nine must be accompanied by an adult. The library is located at 250 Godwin Avenue. Fans invited to ‘Pack the House’ The Midland Park High School Athletic Boosters Association is sponsoring two more upcoming “Pack the House Nights” at Midland Park High School. On Feb. 7 at 4 p.m., the girls’ varsity basketball team will host Park Ridge. Fans will return to the school Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. as the boys’ varsity basketball team faces Emerson. There will be free admission for Midland Park students at these three home events. The induction ceremony will be held at the Brick House in Wyckoff beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $65 per person. The event will begin with a social and will continue with dinner and the inductions. As the senior Thomas tells it, he had asked the Booster Club for the banner commemorating his team’s achievements when the gym was refurbished in 2010 and the banners honoring the school’s top sports teams were replaced. When his son Jake asked what would happen to the remaining banners, it dawned on Thomas that other former athletes and coaches might be interested. The two Thomases set about contacting athletes and coaches, and have already sold about 20 banners. Thomas said he willingly accepted the hall of fame responsibility, noting that he had heard stories of so many great MPHS athletes from his late father, Jerry Thomas, the school’s first head baseball coach. Jerry Thomas was named All Suburban Baseball Coach of the Year in 1962 and 1963, the years he helmed championship teams. Over the last year, Thomas and a committee that includes Mul-
