Midland Park April 24, 2013 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 29 Baseball enthusiasts and area residents turned out to the kick off the baseball/softball season and to mark the 75th anniversary of native son Johnny Vander Meer’s Major League record of back to back no hitters, a record that will never be broken. Mayor Patrick “Bud” O’Hagan proclaimed opening day of the baseball/softball season in perpetuity as Johnny Vander Meer Day in the borough. Sunset Street name was also ceremoniously changed to Johnny Vander Meer Way. In attendance during the festivities was Vander Meer’s sister, Garberdina Nywening.
