The Sixth Annual Waldwick 5K Run/1 Mile Walk on Sunday, April 28 is being dedicated once again in memory of Marine SSG. Joseph D’Augustine, with his initials, JD embedded within the red heart which is at the center of the Run’s logo. “We added the JD inside the heart to symbolize that SSgt Joseph D’Augustine will always be in our hearts and never forgotten,” explained race Director Stan Kowalski. Sgt. D’Augustine, a Waldwick resident and graduate of Waldwick High School, was killed in action on March 27, 2012 while serving his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, following two tours in Iraq. The popular Run, which is USATF sanctioned as well as a NB500 Grand Prix event, gets underway at 9 a.m. at the Waldwick High School Track & Field. Last year it attracted 621 participants, and Kowalski said this year he expects a record turnout of 800 runners and walkers. Two DJs will entertain. “I’m always amazed at how many hours of preparations go into planning the 5K Run. together, it truly makes all the hard work worth it,” said Chamber President Christine Figliuolo. Massage Envy Spa is returning for the third year as the Presenting Sponsor, and PSE&G and New Balance of North Jersey are the Platinum sponsors. In all 59 businesses have signed on as sponsors, for a total of $14,700 raised (not including race registrations).Others are donating food and services. Massage Envy will offer free pre- and post-mini massages at the track. Proceeds will be donated to the Sean Fisher Foundation and the Hope with Heart Camp, both Waldwick-based heart charities; to the Valley Hospital�s Butterflies program and to a number of volunteer organizations in Waldwick.
Prizes will be awarded to male/female first, second and third place finishers. A $75 gift certificate will go to anyone who breaks the course record. The current record for the Waldwick 5K was set by Rob Nihen last year (15:33); Mollie Pozolo set the female course record at 19:37. The 3rd annual David Dunne Memorial Spirit Award will be presented to the top runner from Waldwick. Last year’s recipient was Matt Duggan (17:30:5). For runners unfamiliar with the course or those wanting to refresh their memories, View the Race has prepared an explicit videotape of the actual course. The 4-5 min. narrated piece may be viewed at waldwickchamber.com. The actual course has been visually enhanced with landscaping. Pre-registered participants will receive commemorative tech t-shirts, and valuable goody bags will go to the first 500 registered runners and walkers. This year there are 14 age categories, and over $2,500 worth of awards and gifts is being given away, including valuable watches and gift certificates. Pre-race pickup of bibs, shirts and goody bags will take place on Saturday, April 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Ambulance Corps building off Wyckoff Avenue.
