Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • April 17. 2013 Midland Park Susan Lazzari has been at her new job as the Midland Park Memorial Library’s director for just a month, and she loves the job, to say nothing of its proximity to her home. “I love living in Midland Park. Now I love working here, too,” she said of the community she’s called home for 18 years. Lazzari replaced Melissa Hughes, who resigned to relocate out of the area. “Melissa left everything in good shape,” Lazzari said. “Right now I am assessing the needs of the community and seeing how the library can enrich those needs.” She said she is open to suggestions from residents Susan Lazzari is new Memorial Library director as to what they would like to see offered. “I don’t want to duplicate what is already here,” she added. One group she has already identified is teenagers. “I’d like to expand programming for them, to roll out the welcome mat to them. I like energy in the library,” she said. Lazzari said the library’s greatest strength is the staff. “They are all so friendly, and the patrons respond to that.” She singled out Children’s Librarian Catherine Napoleon. “This summer will be her first reading program, and she is all excited. She is looking to get more integrated in the commu- Library Director Susan Lazzari nity and is reaching out to the businesses for prizes,” Lazzari said, adding that Napoleon started a weekly baby reading program which has taken off beyond expectations. “She saw the need to connect and followed up on it,” Lazzari said of Napoleon, who will start working full time next month when she completes her library science degree. The new director will also put some of her boundless energy in helping rebuild The Friends of the Library, an organization whose membership has dwindled in recent years. “The library really needs the Friends. They can help with fundraising to expand programming. Technology would be beneficial, and the Friends can help with that,” she said. A Ridgewood native, Lazzari holds a master’s of library science degree from Rutgers University. Before coming to Midland Park, she was the circulation supervisor at the Wyckoff Library, where she had worked for nine years. Previously, she worked in the pharmaceutical industry after graduating from Fairfield University with a degree in biology. She and her husband John have two teenage boys.
