April 17. 2013 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 27 Midland Park The Midland Park High School PTA’s 2013 Awareness Week, “Building for the Future,” focused on reducing our carbon footprint. Materials were tailored to the students, who ranged from seventh graders through high school seniors. Juniors and seniors ventured to New York City to participate in a professionally organized historical scavenger hunt of the Wall Street area followed by a visit to the 9/11 Memorial. Later in the week, the juniors and seniors participated in their first Career Day. Speakers volunteered their time to talk to the students about various careers ranging from music entrepreneur and physical therapist to engineer and criminologist. Later in the day, students heard talks about volunteerism, interviewing skills, banking, real estate, and making investments for the future. Students in grades seven through 10 were treated to visit by Earth Adventures, which set up a 17-foot inflatable Earth balloon in the gym. Students could enter the balloon and learn about conserving the world’s rainforests and oceans while gaining better insight into the continents Awareness Week focused on ‘Building for the Future’ and current events affecting the planet. Assemblies included information from a nutritionist, a discussion of where garbage goes after it leaves the curb, and social responsibility. The Sierra Club and Hackensack Riverkeeper discussed environmental concerns. He was born in Wausau, Wisconsin, and came to Wyckoff with his family in 1938. He attended Midland Park Christian School and Ramsey High School. He was a partner in the Hawthorne Laundry, Inc. for 40 years before his retirement in 1998. After retiring, he worked as a crossing guard in Wyckoff. He was a member of the Midland Park Christian Reformed Church. He is survived by his wife Mae Arlene (nee Baker), his children Edward J. Pruim, Susan Gjeltema, Douglas G. Pruim, and Wendy S. Nystrom. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his sisters Dorothy Carlson and Eleanor Unterstein. Arrangements were made by Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff. Stephen Rossfield of Wyckoff died March 28. He was 73. He lived most of his life in Cedar Grove, where he was a member of The United Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his sister Irene Renkas of California. He was predeceased by his father and stepmother John and Wanda Rossfield. He was a greatly loved by his guardians Joseph and Lenore Neale of Woodland Park and his dear friend Julia Belanus of Wyckoff. He will be missed by his caregivers and his many friends at Christian Health Care Center, where he enjoyed his later years. Born with Down syndrome, he touched may lives with his laugh, his singing, his simple faith, and his gentle spirit.
