Mayor Booker to speak at breakfast The Northwest Bergen Saturday AM Democrats will host Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker at its “Breakfast with Cory” set for Saturday, April 20 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Serafina Restaurant, 393 Franklin Avenue in Wyckoff. The Honorable Cory A. Booker, 42, is in his second term working on realizing a bold vision for the city. Newark’s mission is to set a national standard for urban transformation by marshalling the city’s resources to achieve security, economic abundance, and an environment that is nurturing and empowering for individuals and families. He will give his thoughts on the current state of affairs in New Jersey. A question and answer session will follow the talk. The public is invited. A donation of $50 is required. VIP tickets to the fundraiser are available for $250. Proceeds will benefit the local Democratic Party candidates. Tickets are now on sale. The $10 ticket price allows tour participants to visit as many as eight historical homesteads in northwest Bergen County. The sites are some of the oldest and most important in northern New Jersey and most are used as local museums of cultural and family history. On the day of the tour, presenters will offer a look at some of the handicrafts and skills employed in Colonial and Revolutionary War times. The tour sites will include: The Schoolhouse Museum, 650 East Glen Avenue in Ridgewood; The Hermitage, 335 North Franklin Turnpike in Ho-Ho-Kus; the Fell House, 475 Franklin Turnpike in Allendale; the Hopper-Goetschius Museum, 363 East Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River; the Old Stone House, 538 Island Road in Ramsey; the Mahwah Museum, 201 Franklin Turnpike in Mahwah; the Van Allen House, 3 Franklin Avenue in Oakland; and the Zabriskie House, 421 Franklin Avenue in Wyckoff. Tickets will also be sold at Abma’s Farm Market, 700 Lawlins Road in Wyckoff, Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased by mail by writing to the Old Schoolhouse Museum, 650 East Glen Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450. Checks should be made out to the Ridgewood Historical Society. Adornos host Annual Spring Fair Friends of the Adornos will hold their Annual Spring Fair on April 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The fair will be on the grounds of the Adorno Fathers on 575 Darlington Avenue in Ramsey. (Rain date: May 5.) This event will benefit the Adorno Fathers of Ramsey. The fair will feature over 150 exhibitors selling jewelry, clothing, sports collectibles, suncatchers, handbags and wallets, handcrafted gifts, nuts, pickles, dried fruits, giftware, T-shirts, toys, religious jewelry, packaged candy, collectibles and antiques, socks for all ages, bric-a-brac, and more. Delicious homemade foods will be available for sale. The home improvement section features vendors specializing in roofing, siding, additions, basements, bathroom remodeling, cabinets, windows, gutters, and more. A Crafters Corner will feature exhibitors displaying their handmade items and artwork. Children are invited to enjoy the kiddie rides, bounces, and more. Parking and admission are free. Church hosts spiritual direction program The Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River will present “Spiritual Direction: Is it for Me? on Tuesday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday, May 1 at 9:30 a.m. The program is open to anyone interested in deepening his or her spiritual life. The class will help address the questions: Where is God? Why is this happening to me? I’d like to get closer to God. What is the best path for my life? I’d like to learn a more meaningful way to pray. I’m overwhelmed and am having trouble moving on. I need to talk about a spiritual experience with someone who understands.
The Bolger Fitness Center, a program of the Ridgewood YMCA and YWCA Bergen County, recently wrapped up the first installment of its ‘Be the Winner 2013’ program and announced its ‘Biggest Winner’ is Lynn Larson of Ridgewood. Larson lost 8.38 percent of her total body weight during the comprehensive two-month program, which provides the fitness instruction, nutrition strategies and community support needed for healthy and successful weight-loss. A total of seven participants lost a combined 79 pounds, which means 42 participants have lost 367 pounds since ‘Be the Winner’ was launched in 2011. ‘Biggest Winner’ named
Spiritual direction can help heighten awareness of God’s presence and grace operating in everyday life. Spiritual directors and those receiving spiritual direction will be present to share why this is such a meaningful experience for them. This program is sponsored by the Spiritual Direction Ministry. During the week of May 11 through 18, the Presentation will co-sponsor a directed retreat with Saint Paul’s Church of Ramsey. The retreat will begin and end with a group meeting on May 11 and 18 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Church of the Presentation, 271 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. At the first meeting, there will be a 15minute simulation of a spiritual direction session. During the week, Monday through Friday, each person will meet with his or her spiritual director privately for 30 minutes daily at a mutually convenient time. Participants will be asked to spend at least 30 minutes in prayer each day. There is no charge, but a freewill offering may be made at the concluding group meeting. Benefit announced The Bergen County-based running group, Moms in Motion, has partnered with healingSPACE at YWCA Bergen County, and Capello on the Westside Salon, 38 Franklin Turnpike in Waldwick, for a “Go Pink for healingSPACE” event April 22 through 28. With a $10 donation, participants will receive one organic Pure hot pink hair extension. Proceeds will be donated to healingSPACE. No appointment is necessary. HealingSPACE, Bergen County’s only sexual violence resource center, provides a safe and welcoming place for survivors of sexual assault/abuse, and their families and friends. The 90-plus members of Moms in Motion Bergen County meet at the Ridgewood Duck Pond on Mondays and Saturdays to train for upcoming races.
