McMahon Franklin Lakes Council Members Nathalie Lota and Frank Pedone have decided not to seek reelection this year, and the borough’s Republican Club has nominated Ann Swist and Joseph Cadicina to seek the party’s nomination in the June 4 primary election, and ultimately, to seek election in November’s general election. No other Republicans or Democrats filed by last week’s deadline. Independent candidates have until June 4 to file for election. Lota is currently completing her second term on the council and serves as the council president and chair of the council’s Public Safety Committee. Pedone, who was elected in 2010, is completing his first term on the council. He currently serves as chair of the Franklin Lakes Environmental Commission. Mayor Frank Bivona commented about their service on the council, saying, “Before I got involved in local politics I had no idea how much commitment was required to lead our borough. I now understand how much time, effort, and dedicated thought are required to do the job well. Anyone who serves on the council sacrifices much for the benefit of our entire community. We owe Nathalie and Frank a heartfelt thankyou for all they have done. “Nathalie has contributed greatly during her two terms of service to our community. She stood up for what she believed in and was always guided by what was right for Franklin Lakes. We will miss her. “Frank added an independent view and had a keen eye for managing costs during his term on the council. We wish him well in the future and thank him for his many contributions to our town.” Swist has been a borough resident since 1976. Commenting on her candidacy, she said, “I’m interested in maintaining the low tax rate and financial stability of the town and I think I have the skill set to help with what needs to be done. Another reason I am running is I think Mayor Frank Bivona has done an excellent job and I want to maintain that stability.” Swist holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and is a retiree of Bristol Myers Squibb, where she was the director of strategic information and competitive intelligences reporting directly to the senior vice president of licensing and acquisitions. At Squibb she was responsible for $2 million budget, management of a staff of 10, the library operations/clinical record, and IM division support. She has extensive experience in management, planning, analysis, program design, and implementation. She has been a board member, fund raiser, and co-chair of the Women’s Club of Franklin Lakes; co-chair of the Branch Valley Hospital Auxiliary; vice president of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary Executive Board; a Valley Hospital volunteer in the Kurth Cottage Café; and a member of the College Club of Ridgewood Program Committee. She has also been a committee member of the Ramapo College Performing Arts Dinner Series, chairperson of the Public Events Committee for Frank- On April 1, the Indian Trail Club located on Franklin Lake Road reported that unknown persons had entered the club during the overnight and cash was taken from a safe. The amount has yet to be determined. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, Bureau of Criminal Investigation Unit processed the scene. Detective Jeffrey Jost and Officer Donald Wilson and William Zangara investigated. At 1:29 a.m. on March 31, officers Police Department Report responding to a burglar alarm at the Quick Shop located in the Franklin Square Shopping Center on Franklin Avenue discovered that unknown persons had burglarized the store. Entry had been gained by smashing out the glass entrance door with rocks. Cash, coins, and cartons of cigarettes were taken. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, BCI Unit processed the scene. Her political involvement includes being a member of the County Committee representing District 2, and being membership chair of the Republican Club of Franklin Lakes, where her husband, Peter, serves as president. Cadicina received his under graduate degree from Seton Hall University and is a graduate of the Thomas M. Cooley Law School, a private non-profit educational corporation in Michigan. He is an attorney and managing member of the law firm of Laufer, Dafena, Cadicina, Jensen & Boyd, LLC in Morristown. He is a member of the Franklin Lakes Republican Club. He and his wife, Patti, have two children, Joseph and Carmela, who attend the Franklin Lakes schools. Cadicina is a member of several county, state, and national bar associations, and he has served on the planning board and zoning board in Saddle Brook, where he gained significant experience and knowledge of municipal land use issues. In addition, he previously served on the board of education in Garfield, where he says he was (continued on page 37)
