Monday at the Movies announced The Wyckoff Free Public Library, located at 200 Woodland Avenue, will present Monday at the Movies at 2 p.m. in the Shotmeyer Room. April’s movies feature heroes who find themselves on incredible personal journeys. On April 15, the feature film will be “Sullivan’s Travels,” (1941) starring Joel McCrea and Veronica Lake. John L. Sullivan is a successful, spoiled, and naive director of fluff films, who decides he wants to make a movie about the downtrodden poor. Much to the chagrin of his producers, he sets off in tramp’s clothing with one dime in his pocket to experience poverty firsthand. His troubles really begin when he decides to end his experiment. This 94minute film is rated PG. On April 22, the movie will be “Stand by Me,” (1986) starring River Phoenix and Wil Wheaton. Based on Stephen King’s story “The Body,” this film tells the tale of Gordie LaChance, a writer who looks back on his preteen days when he and three close friends went on an adventure to find the body of a kid who had gone missing and was presumed dead. The film is rated R and is 89 minutes long. For details, call the library at (201) 891-4866. Free oral cancer screening offered In recognition of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Elliot Frey, DMD will offer free oral cancer screenings on April 10 and 17 from 12:30 to 7:30 p.m. at his office located at 11 Wyckoff Avenue in Wyckoff. Oral cancer is not a rare disease. Approximately 42,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer every year in the U.S. This disease kills one person every hour of every day, and over 100 new individuals will be diagnosed with it each day. Oral cancer can often be caught early, even as a precancer. With early detection, survival rates are high, and the side effects from treatment are at their lowest. There are two distinct pathways by which most people come to oral cancer. One is through the use of tobacco and alcohol and the other is through exposure to the HPV16 virus (human papilloma virus version 16), which is now the leading cause of oral cancers in the U.S., and the same one that is responsible for the vast majority of cervical cancers. Due to the HPV16 connection, the quickest growing segment of the oral cancer population is young, otherwise healthy non-smokers. Screenings should be conducted every year. To make an appointment, call (201) 445-4144. For more information about oral cancer, visit The Oral Cancer Foundation’s official website at www.oralcancer.org.
