Meetings are held at 1 p.m. the second Monday of each month from September through June. Sessions are held at the Paramus VFW Post 6699 at 6 Winslow Place in Paramus and feature speakers on topics of interest. Senior clubs that are not currently members may contact John A. Walsh at (201) 483-8633 or jaw.ops350@yahoo. com for an application to join. The council is a grassroots, non-partisan, not-for-profit organization consisting of over 40 senior clubs. The council has been serving the senior citizens of Bergen County for over 37 years. Ramapo to host Distinguished Expert Series On Oct. 10, as part of the North Jersey Public Policy Network, Distinguished Expert Series, Ramapo High School will host Joel C. Cantor, Sc.D., director for State Health Policy at Rutgers University and professor in the Department of Public Policy at Rutgers University. Cantor will present “The Affordable Care Act: The Facts.” He will address the complex issues surrounding this legislation, including how the new law will impact individuals, families, the workplace, and Medicare. A question and answer session will follow. Lindy Washburn, a writer on health care policy will serve as moderator. On Oct. 17, Professor Lawrence Lessig, the director of the Edmond J. Safra Foundation Center for Ethics at Harvard University, will present “The Best Government Money Can Buy.” Lessig will outline the corrupting effects of money in politics, institutional corruption, and how it weakens the public trust in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. The professor will discuss how to take our government back and will answer questions. Lessig is a professor at Harvard Law School, and is the author of “Republic Lost.” These programs are free and will be held at Ramapo High School, 331 George Street in Franklin Lakes, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. All are welcome. Brogan to discuss Medicare Part D Sheila Brogan, eldercare coordinator for Children’s Aid and Family Services, will offer a discussion of the Medicare Part D prescription plans for 2013 on Oct. 17. The 4 p.m. program will be held at the Northwest Senior Center at 46-50 Center Street in Midland Park. Seniors have an opportunity to enroll in a new plan Successful Blood Drive LAN Associates Engineering, Planning, Architecture, Surveying, Inc., headquartered in Midland Park, recently hosted its eighth Blood Drive in the past seven years. The Community Blood Service’s bloodmobile was parked outside of LAN Associates to assist donors. “LAN’s staff gives to an assortment of community services throughout the year, but one of the best ways to give back is by donating blood,” said Ronald Panicucci, CEO and treasurer of LAN. “Especially late summer when there is typically a blood shortage,” added Kenneth Karle, president of LAN. Nationally, less than five percent of the population donates blood. In New Jersey, less than three percent of the population donates. Church hosts ‘Acoustic Worship Service’ The Old Stone Church in Upper Saddle River has announced a new “Acoustic Worship Service” at 5 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month. The music is contemporary, folk, traditional, Gospel, and original. This season’s theme will be “Biography of Faith.” Everyone is invited to join with song leader Rebecca Abma, Pastor Bob Fretz, musicians, believers, and seekers of all ages. Upcoming services are planned for Oct. 13, Nov. 10, and Dec. 8. On Oct. 7, the church will host a concert featuring the Nashville band The Vespers. The group sends out a positive message and has a great sound. The band just self-released its second album, “The Fourth Wall.” Concert tickets are $10.
