He was U.S. National Guard veteran. He graduated from Brooklyn Poly Tech High School, where he was a football star. He earned a football scholarship to Cornell University, and graduated with a mechanical engineering degree in 1961. He went on to achieve his MBA in 1965 at Columbia University, and earned the designation of Licensed Professional Engineer. He was a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. His engineering career began in the food industry, and spanned the fields of construction materials and commercial roofing. He left corporate life in 1985 to found G&M Roofing of Hackensack. He retired in 2000. He is survived by his wife Dianne, his children Katherin Nukk-Freeman of Short Hills, Randall Nukk of Chicago, and Kristine Nukk of Hoboken, his stepchildren Paul and Neil, nine grand children, and his brother Dr. Alan Nukk. Before retiring in 1990, she was employed by the Okonite Company in Ramsey for 20 years. She was a parishioner of Saint Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church in Ridgewood since 1959. She is survived by her sons Richard of Milan, Ohio and George of Westfield, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Richard. Virgens of Melbourne, Florida and Greenwood Lake, New York, and formerly of Ridgewood, died Sept. 15. He was 90. He was a U.S. Merchant Marines in WWII and saw active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserve for the Korean Conflict. He retired after 20 years of service. He graduated from SUNY Maritime College in Fort Schuyler, New York. During his 50-year business career, he marketed valves to the industrial, petro-chemical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning industries. He was past president of Mechanical Products Warehousing, Hickory Supply Corp., and the Virgens Agency. He was an associate member of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers and past president of the New Jersey Sales Representative Association. He was past president of the Lakeside Community Club in Hewitt, Carlstadt Active Turners, and the New Jersey District Council Member of the American Turners. He was a member of the Indian River Kiwanis Club. He sponsored the Red Cross Blood Drive at the Indian River Colony Club. He was on the fundraising committee of the Brevard Red Cross and a Red Cross volunteer at the Patrick Air Force Base 45th Medical Facility, and a member of American Legion Post 163. He was past president of the Men’s Club of the Advent Lutheran Church in Melbourne, Florida. He was a member of the Ridgewood Fire Department and a life member of the Ridgewood Volunteer Fire Association. He served on the Ridgewood Board of Adjustment for seven years, where he held the positions of chairman and vice chairman. He is survived by his wife Ursula, his sons Bruce and Ray, his daughter-in-law Jane, and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Emilie. Michael L. Garbowski of Mahwah died Sept. 16. He was 25. He had a love for fast cars, trucks, and engines. His passion was to rebuild and remake car and truck engines. He is survived by his parents Leszek and Anna Garbowski (nee Buczkowski), his sister Annette Garbowski, his grandmothers Janina and Sophie, and his godparents Walter and Nancy. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles Joe Garbowski, Walter Buczkowski, Marian Buczkowski, Jan Buczkowski, and Regina Wadolowski and his cousins David, Paul, Monika, Pawel, Aneta, Gosia, Peter, Dorota, Jola, Marzena and Tomek. Arrangements were made by Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home in Ramsey. Alfred V. Hunkler of Mahwah, formerly of Long Island, New York, died Sept. 15. He was 65. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He graduated from Hofstra University with a degree in computer science. He was an independent computer consultant for many years, working full time until just a few months before his passing. Lillian Kaczala, nee Braakman, of Mahwah, formerly of Hillsdale, died Sept. 13. She was 87. She was a member of Faith Reformed Church in Midland Park. She is survived by her husband Walter Kaczala of Mahwah, her daughters Betty Ann Kaczala of Allendale and Sandra Lee Irwin of Danbury, Connecticut, two grandchildren, and two stepgrandchildren. She was a graduate of Ridgewood High School and attended Kathryn Gibbs Business School. Prior to retiring, she was employed by Patchett, Grode & Topp Insurance Co. She was a member of All Saints Church and its alter guild for over 40 years. She was a member of the Saint Ann Guild, and volunteered at The Valley Hospital as a nurse’s aide, at Kurth Cottage, and in the patient relations department. She was a member of the Glen Rock Woman’s Club and chairperson of its Home Life department. She is survived by her children Steve Keffer of San Ramon, California, Doug Keffer of Stockbridge, Vermont, and Priscilla Keffer of Haledon, and one grandson. She was predeceased by her husband Norman F. Keffer, her son John “Buster” Keffer, and her brother John S. Hall.

Gerald “Jerry” M. Rutkowski, formerly of Waldwick, died Sept. 12. He was 70. He received his BA and MA degrees from Seton Hall University in South Orange, and embarked on a 34-year teaching career that included Saint Francis in Ridgefield Park, Fairview Middle School, and Palisades Park High School. He taught American History, English, and Latin. He served as Bergen County voter registrar at the high school and was the advisor to the school advisor’s staff. He received the New Jersey Governor’s Teacher’s Award, the Excellence in Teaching Award from Union College, and special recognition from the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was employed by Englewood Hospital and Medical Center as a security officer and retired after 27 years as a supervisor. He was a member of the Waldwick Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years, rising from the rank of firefighter to chief of the department in 1995, a position he held for three years. He was a member of the New Jersey State Fire Chiefs Association, and a lifetime member of the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association. His was a member of Mary Help of Christians Church in Parkland, Florida, where he served as a member of the school advisory coun-
