Farmers Market features Apple Fest The Ramsey Farmers Market will celebrate its Third Apple Festival on Sunday, Sept. 23. Macouns, red delicious, Macintosh, and many more varieties of apples will be on hand, along with the late summer bounty of fresh produce and products from over 30 local farmers and vendors. The guest vendor, Angela’s Mortgage Cake, will have apple, rum, and other cakes for sale. The market is open every Sunday, now through Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Main Street train station. Support group to meet A new Alzheimer’s Caregivers’ Support Group will meet on Thursday, Sept. 27 at the Ramsey Public Library, 30 Wyckoff Avenue in Ramsey. Anyone with a family member who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia disorder is invited to share his or her concerns in this supportive, caring, and confidential environment. The group is offered through the trained facilitators at Distinctive Care Geriatric Care Management in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Association of New Jersey. Nurse Sophia Heftler, founder of Distinctive Care Geriatric Care Management, will facilitate the meeting. Meetings are planned for Oct. 25 and Nov. 29. Hearts & Crafts Grief Counseling forming groups Hearts & Crafts Grief Counseling of Ramsey will be forming new counseling groups beginning this fall. Weeknight sessions will be built around specific kinds of loss, including the loss of a sibling, spouse, or parent. Schedules will be created based on interest and availability. Services are offered to adults, teens, and children starting at ages four. Hearts & Crafts Grief Counseling was founded in 1994 to serve families living with serious illness and loss. The organization is dedicated to providing a safe, caring environment as families work through the healing process. Situated in a cozy carriage house, the counseling center has an art room, family room, and loft to replace the conventional psychotherapy office. Clients receive individual counseling and participate in support groups. Clients hail from 80 communities in New Jersey and New York, and many are referred by schools, medical practices, and other Hearts & Crafts families. Reduced fees are available for qualifying clients. Funding is secured through donations and modestly priced counseling fees. Hearts & Crafts is located a 60 East Main Street in Ramsey. Church’s Bereavement Support Group will begin meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20. The group will meet from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the parish center located at 193 Wyckoff Avenue. The eight-week program will offer support for those struggling to cope with bereavement. Knights plan a day of golf The Ramsey Knights of Columbus Council #3962 will host its Annual Charity Golf Outing on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Wallkill Golf Club in Middletown, New York. This event will benefit various local charities. The cost to attend is $130 and includes the day of golf, a cart, breakfast and lunch, and dinner, which will be served at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Ramsey. Book groups plan meetings The Connections Book Group at the First Presbyterian Church, 15 Shuart Lane in Ramsey, will discuss Kate Mortan’s “The Forgotten Garden” on Sept. 19.The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Metzger Room. At the age of 21, the protagonist, Nell, discovers that she was found alone on a ship headed for Australia, and the father she has loved is merely a man who found her. She sets out on a quest of self-discovery, trying to piece together her history and learn the truth about her origins. On Sept. 26, the Literary Ladies will discuss “The House of Mirth” and/or “The Age of Innocence” by Edith Wharton. Eligible applicants must be residents of Ramsey who have completed their freshman year of college.
