Though Matthews does attract the occasional straggler going through town, its clientele Matthews Diner is the hub of the community’s life is mostly local – families for Sunday brunch after church, kids after a game, couples after the movies or a social function, volunteers before or after a meeting to go over association business – the scenarios are myriad. Matthews is the community’s meeting place, the great equalizer, the constant factor in the area’s bustling daily life. And even though it has been at its present location since 1975, Matthews has maintained its appeal, just as it has also changed with the times. It recently underwent an exterior remodeling, and an interior renovation provided an updated yet “homey” feel. The consistent factor, however, is the owners’ commitment to offering good food and excellent service at reasonable prices in a comfortable environment. “It’s a fine, well-tuned operation, fueled by a well trained staff who relate to the customers superbly well,” says Spero Matthews of his restaurant’s ability to offer a varied, quality menu with efficiency and a smile.
