The event will be held at Commodore Perry Field on East Ramapo Avenue. Mahwah children and their families are welcome to participate. New this year will be a prize for the best costume by an adult accompanying a child. Reflection service, book discussion set On Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m., the Church of the Immaculate Conception at 900 Darlington Avenue in Mahwah will offer a quiet reflection on the Beatitudes with Lectio Divina. Latin for “divine reading,” Lectio Divina is an ancient practice of prayer and contemplation of the Scriptures. The Church of the Immaculate Conception practices the prayer of Lectio Divina monthly. The Not by Bread Alone Spiritual Book Discussion Group will discuss “Mere Christianity” by C.S. Lewis on Sunday, Oct. 28. The group meets at 5 p.m. at Panera Bread, which is located at 1300 State Route 17 in Ramsey. “Mere Christianity,” has been read by millions worldwide, explains and defends the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times. Rejecting the boundaries that divide Christianity’s many denominations, Lewis finds a common ground on which all Christians can stand together. Learn about musical machines Michele Zarcone from the Morris Museum will present “Marvelous Musical Machines” on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The program will be held at the Mahwah Public Library at 100 Ridge Road at 7 p.m. The discussion will focus on the historical significance of the Morris Museum’s collection of mechanical musical instruments and how the concept of entertainment has changed over time. The Morris Museum was awarded the Murtogh D. Guinness collection of 700 historic mechanical musical instruments and automata (mechanical figures) and more than 5,000 programmed media, ranging from player piano rolls to pinned cylinders. This program incorporates a variety of multi-media clips. The program is free of charge and no registration is necessary. Library hosts Movie Series The Mahwah Pubic Library, located at 100 Ridge Road in Mahwah, presents free weekly movies on Thursdays afternoons at 1:30 p.m. Popcorn and a drink are provided. Directed by Scott Hicks and starring Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling, this 2012 film is rated PG-13. “People Like Us” will be the feature presentation on Nov. 8. While settling his recently deceased father’s estate, a salesman discovers he has a sister he never knew about, leading both siblings to re-examine their perceptions about family and life choices. This 2012 film was directed by Alex Kurtzman and stars Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, and Michelle Pfeiffer. The rating for “People Like Us” is PG-13. On Nov. 15, there will be a screening of “Amazing Spider-Man.” Peter Parker finds a clue that might help him understand why his parents disappeared when he was young. His path puts him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner. This PG-13 rated movie was directed by Marc Webb and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Rhys Ifans. “A Separation” will be presented on Nov. 29. A married couple is faced with a difficult decision: to improve the life of their child by moving to another country or to stay in Iran and look after a deteriorating parent who has Alzheimer’s disease. This film won an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 84th Academy Awards. Directed by Asghar Farhadi and starring Peyman Moadi, Leila Hatami, and Sareh Bayat, this PG-13 rated film is in Persian with English subtitles. Call the library at (201) 529-READ for details. Sunday performances announced The Mahwah Public Library provides free programs on Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are not necessary; seating is available on a “first come” basis. On Nov. 4, The Kootz will perform a classic rock concert. The program will feature the music of the 1960s and 1970s including favorites from The Beatles; Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Steve Winwood; Bob Dylan; The Byrds; Rolling Stones; and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Marlene VerPlanck will perform a concert of Ameri- can standards on Nov. 11. As a studio singer, VerPlanck has sung with everyone from Sinatra to Kiss. Play a Les Paul guitar Musicians are invited to sign up to play precious guitars once owned by Les Paul. Forty-five minute sessions will be held at the Mahwah Museum on Dec. 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. Among the guitars available is one that was made especially for Paul and used in his West Coast performances. An identical guitar was kept on the East Coast for his use. There is also a guitar that was made for Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and a custom guitar made by Gibson to honor the first responders on the 10th Anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Up to five players can play together at each 45-minute session. Family and friends are welcome to observe. Fortyfive minute sessions are $25 per guitar player and $5 per audience member. The cookbook contains 425 recipes, and costs $10. The cookbook is now available at the church or nursery school office, 125 Glasgow Terrace.
