Ramsey Girl Scout Troop 1212 began working on their Silver Award project last fall by working with therapy dogs at the Kathy Santo Dog Training in Ramsey. Olivia Cseh, Erin Latz, Kate Miller, and Emily Petunas assisted with evaluation of the canines being trained to be used as therapy dogs. The girls researched how these dogs could be used to help young readers, and discovered the R.E.A.D. program. Reading Education Assistance Dogs is a program that increases a child’s confidence and fluency as they read aloud to a well-trained therapy dog. The Girl Scouts met with Miss Maggie at the public library and collaborated with dog trainer Stacey Samela, several therapy dogs and their owner to develop the local program. Participating children get one-on-one time with a dog, and read a book of their choice to the non-judgmental animal. The program began in the spring and continued through the summer. Registration for the fall program is currently taking place and will run monthly for children in grades one through five. To register, contact Miss Maggie at the library, (201) 3271445. The Ramsey Public Library is located at 30 Wyckoff Avenue in Ramsey. Olivia Cseh, Erin Latz, Kate Miller, and Emily Petunas visit with Miss Maggie and one of the R.E.A.D. canine companions. Starting Oct. 7, members of the Ramsey High School Big Blue Marching Band and Color Guard will be ringing doorbells and taking orders for the Annual Fall Hoagie Sale. Hoagies will be delivered on Saturday, Oct. 13. Proceeds from the sale help the band and guard travel to various competitions where they promote Ramsey as one of the finest high school bands in the tri-state area. Donations are always welcome.
