October 3, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 13 Mahwah Minutes Board of health to meet The Mahwah Board of Health will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Mahwah Municipal Building located at 475 Corporate Drive. Olympic gold medalist to appear at foundation run Olympic gold medalist Derrick Adkins will make a special guest appearance at the Fifteenth Annual Mahwah Schools Foundation 10K, 5K and Kid Run. Each fall, the MSF launches the school year with these races, which are held in Darlington County Park in Mahwah. This year’s event will be held Sunday, Oct. 7. Registration is now open and pre-registration is encouraged for all races at Active. com or www.themsf.org. In addition to the 10K, 5K and Kid Run, the event also features family activities, live entertainment, food, and the Trails to Wellness health fair. This year, Adkins will be on hand to sign T-shirts, pose for pictures, and help the Kid Run participants warm up. Adkins, who was the winner of the gold medal in the 400 meter hurdles in Atlanta, is excited to spend time with the future Olympians, and said he is looking forward to participating in the races with them. This year, the day is dedicated to the memory of Mayor ‘Dick’ Martel. The 10K will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K will begin at 10:15, with award ceremonies following each race. The Kid Run will begin at noon, following the 11:30 a.m. warm up with Adkins. Check in and registration will begin at 7 a.m. for the 10K, 8:30 for the 5K, and 10:30 for the Kid Run. Day of race registration fees are $25 for the 10K, $21 for the 5K, or $35 for both races. Discounts are available for pre-race day registration and members of the New Jersey Road Runners or USATF-NJ Members. Kid Run registration fees are $10 per entrant. For the 10K and 5K, cash prizes will be awarded to the top three overall male and female finishers. Trophies and medals will be awarded to the top three male and female runners in each race in each age category. All children registered for the Kid Run will receive a T-shirt and participation ribbon. All events will be held rain or shine. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month The Mahwah Public Library will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with “Living Latin Music” on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. Professor Edna Negrón will take a historic look at salsa and tango, their evolution as musical genres, and rise as popular dances. Negrón is a professor of journalism at Ramapo College, and a veteran journalist with more than 25 years of experience as a reporter and editor for publications in New Jersey, New York, and Florida. She researches and writes about issues affecting the growing Latino population. The program is free. No registration is necessary. The library is located at 100 Ridge Road. Concert series announced Ramapo College has announced its Open Door Concert Series. These free live music performances of classical music masterpieces will be offered on campus in the York Room at the Birch Mansion. The concerts will be held at 7 p.m. on the following dates: Wednesday, Oct. 10, “Sonatas for Violin and Piano,” featuring Dimitri Hadjipetkov on violin and Itay Goren on piano; Wednesday, Nov. 7, “A Heroic Path: A Journey into Beethoven’s Eroica,” featuring words and music by Goren; and Wednesday, Dec. 5, “Music for Piano Trio,” featuring Trio Echo: Cathy Yang on violin, Suji Kim on cello, and Goren on piano. Sunday performances announced The Mahwah Public Library provides free programs on Sundays at 2 p.m. during the month of October. Tickets are not necessary, and seating available on a “first come” basis. On Oct 7, tenor Salvatore Chiarelli and pianist William Glazier will offer “From Italy with Love.” Chiarelli will perform Italian/Neapolitan favorites, such as “O Sole Mio,” “Mamma,” “Dicitencello Vuje,” “Parlami d’amore,” “Chitarra Romana,” “Ritorna Me,” “Innamorata,” “Con te partiro,” “Anima e core,” “O marenariello/ Vicino mare,” and more. Pianist Itay Goren and violinist Evelyn Estava will perform works by Mozart, Brahms, and Debussy on Oct. 14. This concert is a part of the library’s Chamber Music Series. On Oct. 21, the 17 North Band will present a program of blues, classic country, swing, Latin, klezmer, and familiar ballads. The band’s six musicians previously played at the Military Gala in West Point, New York, and at the Puffin Cultural Forum in Teaneck. The East Lynne Theater Company production, “Emma Goldman: My Life,” will be presented on Oct. 28. Written and performed by Lorna Lable and directed by Karen Case Cook, this program is set in the early 1900s and features the outspoken immigrant Emma Goldman. Goldman always spoke her mind, whether it was on women’s rights or the widening gap between the rich and the poor. Funding for this program has been made possible by the Puffin Foundation. Blessing of the Animals set Holy Cross Lutheran Church, located at the corner of West Ramapo Ave and Route 202 North in Mahwah, will host its annual Blessings of the Animals at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7.
