Gingerbread house workshops set Mahwah Girl Scout Ambassador Troop 903 will host a series of after school workshops at which boys and girls will build and decorate gingerbread houses. Workshops will be held Dec. 3 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Betsy Ross School, Dec. 5 from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. at Ramapo Ridge Middle School, and Dec. 10 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at George Washington School. The cost is $11. (Snow date for all workshops is Dec. 17.) In addition to the gingerbread project, each child will take home a fun patch. Snacks will be provided. Proceeds from these workshops will support the troop’s Gold Award projects and educational travel. ‘Music of Vaudeville’ slated The Mahwah Public Library will present “Music of Vaudeville” with Cracked Walnuts Jan and Jeff Ausfahl on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. The entire family may enjoy this program of music, stories, and humor from 1890s Vaudeville through Prohibition. The program will include favorites such as “Carolina in the Morning” and “Shine on Harvest Moon.” The program is free, and no tickets are necessary. Seats will be available on a “first come” basis. Free Rabies Vaccine Clinic announced The Mahwah Board of Health will hold its annual free Rabies Vaccine Clinic on Wednesday, Nov. 28. The clinic will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mahwah Department of Public Works Garage located at 142 North Railroad Avenue. Dogs on leashes will be vaccinated from 6 to 7:30 p.m. No retractable leashes please. Cats in carriers are welcome from 7:30 to 8 p.m.
Pets will be vaccinated with the three-year rabies vaccine formulation as provided by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. This program is open to New Jersey residents only. Library hosts varied programs The Mahwah Public Library provides free programs on Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are not necessary; seating is available on a “first come” basis. On Nov. 18, the Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre will present “Astonishment” by Jan Slepian and adapted by Laura Ekstrand. This new adaptation of “Astonishment: Life in the Slow Lane,” is a cornucopia of reflections on aging with humor and grace. Presented in honor of Slepian’s 90th birthday, the hour-long performance comments on the astonishment of being old, the heartbreak and comfort of companionship in later years, and the ridiculous moments in everyday life. The show is bittersweet, insightful, and laugh-out-loud funny. Slepian is the author of 28 children’s books and novels for young adults. Her picture book, “The Hungry Thing,” is now a classic, and her young adult novel, “The Alfred Summer,” was honored with a National Book Award nomination and inclusion on the School Library Journal’s list of 100 books that shaped the century. “Titanic: Survivors and Their Stories” will be presented by Traveling Literary Theater on Nov. 25. Attendees will learn details of the disaster through heartfelt accounts from those who survived and boarded the Carpathia on the morning of April 15, 1912. The library is located at 100 Ridge Road. Group to discuss Saint Luke’s Gospel At 5 p.m. on Nov. 25, the Not by Bread Alone Spiritual Book Group will discuss the Gospel of Saint Luke at Panera Bread, 1300 Route 17 in Ramsey. Luke’s gospel was written for early Christians and is noted for its themes
stressing the mercy of God, documenting the merciful acts of Jesus Christ, accounts of Jesus’ concern for the poor and oppressed, and his care and respect for women. Saint Luke also devotes much attention to the interior life of prayer. The group’s upcoming schedule will include: “A Father Who Keeps His Promises” by Scott Hahn on Dec. 30; “Meeting Jesus in the Gospels” by George Martin on Jan. 27, 2013; and “Sober Intoxication of the Spirit” by Raniero Cantalemessa on Feb. 24. CFA seeks donations for Thanksgiving The Center for Food Action in Mahwah is seeking donations for its 2012 Thanksgiving Distribution. The center is asking members of the community to help assure that local families and individuals who are struggling to keep food on their tables are able to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner. Donations of complete meals are being sought. The following items are needed: frozen turkeys, canned vegetables, canned yams, canned fruit, gravy, instant potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, pasta and sauce, 100 percent fruit juice, cranberry sauce, and supermarket gift cards. Donations may be dropped off at the Lincoln Technical Institute at 70 McKee Drive in Mahwah on Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Nov. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon or at the Center for Food Action at 90 Ridge Road in Mahwah by Nov. 14. Elks host Sock Hop The Mahwah Elks, locate at 1 Foxwood Lane in Mahwah, will host a Sock Hop on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 6:30 to 11 p.m. The cost of this event will be $25 and will include a buffet-style dinner. Live music from the 1950s and ‘60s, will be presented by Beauty and the Grease. Guests are invited to come in period costumes; there will be a prize for the best outfit.
