The Greater Ramsey UNICO honored Andrew D’Angelo and Courtney Colucci of Mahwah High School as the 2012 Brian Piccolo Award winners. They were recognized earlier this month along with other select Bergen County Italian-American student athletes who model the ideals of Brian Piccolo. This award was named in memory of Piccolo, a courageous young man who was an inspiration for many though he died at age 26 in 1970. In order to be eligible for the award, students must be of Italian American ancestry, must be a varsity athlete, must be of good character, and must be a graduating senior. Colucci has been involved in volleyball, winter track, and softball. She is known for her genuine and honest personality and for bringing enthusiasm to any activity. She is an honor roll student and is a member of both the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. She has earned bronze, silver, and gold scholastic stars in her first three years of high school. She has also received multiple Principal’s Awards and the Minds in Motion award during the varsity athletic season. She has earned varsity letters in two sports. She is involved in Student Council, HOPE, Science League, 3-D Design Club, and the Current Events Club. D’Angelo has been the varsity soccer goalie for the past two seasons. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Principal Advisory Committee. He has earned multiple Principal’s Awards, and the bronze and silver scholastic awards of academic achievement. He also received the Minds in Motion Award for achieving the high honor roll during a varsity sports season. On the soccer field and in school, this senior captain is a quiet leader who sets a positive example in integrity, hard work, and commitment.
