The Old Station Museum was built in 1871 and moved to its present location by the Mahwah Historical Society in 1965. Shortly thereafter, it was opened as a museum and has been continuously in operation ever since. The Mahwah Museum Society, as successor to the historical society, now operates the venue. The station was a vital part of the history of Mahwah. Farmers were able to
ship their products to a larger market, the community could provide recreation for summer visitors, and commuters could reach their workplaces in New York City. The station features a small operating model railroad and displays of many other items from the railroad’s history. The 1929 caboose was brought to the site and refurbished as a museum, where visitors learn about the importance of the caboose as a nerve center of each train and a place for the crew to relax. The Mahwah Museum at 201 Franklin Turnpike will remain open on Wednesdays and weekends from 1 to5 p.m. through June 30 and on Sundays through July 29. Exhibits include “Les Paul in Mahwah: A Tribute,” “New Jersey Fights in the Civil War,” and the Donald Cooper HO-scale Model Railroad. On June 9, the museum will hold a gala to celebrate what would have been Les Paul’s 97th birthday. The gala will be

held at the trustees pavilion at Ramapo College at 7:30 p.m. The cost to attend is $25 and features wine, hors d’oeuvres, light fare, and birthday cake. There will be live music by Lou Pallo and others. The college is located at 505 Ramapo Valley Road in Mahwah. Many autographed collectibles donated to the museum by a prominent Les Paul autograph collector will be offered in a special auction. There will be opportunities to win autographed guitars—including one signed by George Benson and another signed by Eric Clapton – and other music memorabilia. Tickets to both the gala and the fundraiser contests may be purchased at the Mahwah Museum. Tickets for the prizes are also available at Devon Fine Jewelry, 303 Franklin Avenue in Wyckoff; Robbie’s Music, 280 Route 17 in Mahwah; Alto Music, 328 Route 59 in Airmont, New York, and Mahwah Bar and Grill, 2 Island Road in Mahwah.
