Botta buys first poppy
Ramsey Mayor Chris Botta purchasing this year’s first poppy from VFW Post 682 poppy girl Rebecca Fogelson and WWII veteran George Halik. Ramsey residents are encouraged to support veterans this year during poppy sales, and to attend the borough’s Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 28, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Veterans Park. The artificial poppies are distributed by volunteers in exchange for contributions to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans. Each nine-piece poppy is made by veterans for veterans in auxiliary-sponsored Poppy Shops that supplement physical and psychological therapy needed by hospitalized and disabled veterans. The veteran makes the poppy and is paid a small amount for each painstakingly-made flower. For some, it is their only income.
