May 9, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 5 Mahwah Mayor’s post, three council seats up for election by Frank J. McMahon The position of mayor in the Township of Mahwah and three council seats will be on the ballot in the general election in November. Mayor William Laforet has picked up a nominating petition and recently held a fundraiser at which he announced that he will seek election to a full four-year term. He is currently serving the final year of deceased former Mayor Richard J Martel’s term. Laforet was elected to serve that term in November 2011. John DaPuzzo, a former mayor and councilman in the township, has obtained a nominating petition, but said he has not yet decided if he will seek election as mayor. John Roth has advised that he will seek reelection to the council, while Councilwoman Lisa DiGiulio has picked up a nominating petition but has not decided if she will seek reelection Councilman Samuel Alderisio has advised that he has decided not to seek reelection, while Daniel Weixeldorfer, a previous candidate for the council and current member of the planning board, has picked up a nominating petition and confirmed that he intends to seek election to the council. Laforet has been mayor since being elected in November. He has been the owner of the Sunoco Gas Station at the corner of Franklin Turnpike and Miller Road in Mahwah for the past 34 years and he is a current member of the Mahwah Municipal Alliance. Alderisio is completing his second term on the council. He explained that, when he was first elected, he promised to finish his four-year term and run for a second term and then let someone else come on the council. He explained further that he has spent 36 years on the township’s police force, completing his career at chief of the department, and eight years on the council and, while he still enjoys his time on the council and he has been asked by many people to run again, there are other things he would like to do and he has decided to move on. Alderisio said he is making his intention known now so that other residents, who might not want to seek election to the council if all the incumbents are running again, might be motivated to seek election to an open seat. DiGiulio has been a resident for 31 years and has been on the council for 20 years. She is serving her sixth term. She has been council vice president five times and president three times. Roth is completing his second term and will be seeking his third full term in November. He has served as the council’s vice president and president and has been the council’s liaison to the Cable TV Committee. Weixeldorfer has been a licensed real estate broker for over 20 years and is currently RE/MAX real estate broker, past president of the Passaic County Board of Realtors, and is currently the president of the Ramapo Ridge Phase II Condominium Association. The nominating petitions that must be filed in order to seek election to the positions of mayor or council are currently available in the township clerk’s office. That number is based on the statutory requirement of obtaining one percent of the number of registered voters in the township. Nominating petitions must be filed with the township clerk no later than 4 p.m. on Sept. 4.
