In November 2011, at the urging of the Midland Park Board of Education on behalf of the parents of a homeschooled ninth grade student and the intervention of the New Jersey Department of Education, the NJSIAA permitted home-schooled children to participate in interscholastic sports. The related NJSIAA guidelines require that a student meet the residency requirements of the school district that serves the high school in the district; that the parent of a home-schooled student submit a written request to the school principal to allow the student to try out for an athletic team; and compliance with the same physical examination, insurance, age, academic, and other requirements for participation that is required for all students at the high school. The NJSIAA guidelines also require that the home-schooled student meet all eligibility requirements of the NJSIAA and demonstrate to the satisfaction of local school officials that the student is academically qualified to participate.
