The election of officers will be held June 13 at the senior center. Ramsey residents who are over the age of 60 are invited to participate in the many activities offered. For application information, call Al Crecenzo at (201) 825-2925. The seniors will visit Thomas Edison’s estate and laboratory in West Orange on Sunday, May 20. The trip will include lunch at The Manor. The cost is $58 per person, payable to the Ramsey Seniors. The fee will be $53 for America the Beautiful cardholders. Seating is limited. The bus will leave from Finch Park at 8:45 a.m. and will return at approximately 3:30 p.m. Call (201) 825-3400 for availability. Seniors may sign up at borough hall for the trip to see the Broadway show, “Memphis” on Wednesday, June 13. The cost is $80 per person and includes transportation to New York City and lunch at Lattanzi Restaurant on 46th Street. The Wii tennis tournament between the seniors and Girl Scouts will take place Saturday, May 5 at the senior center at 2 p.m. Ramsey Girl Scout Preethi Sankaran has been coaching the seniors in Wii sports since November for her Gold Award service project. The seniors have been training in interactive tennis, baseball, bowling, golf, and boxing in twice weekly sessions run by Sankaran. Family members are invited to come and cheer on their favorites. An AARP 55-Alive Defensive Driving Course will be offered at the senior center on Thursday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sign up at borough hall. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Checks should be made payable to AARP. Participants should bring a New Jersey driver’s license, and are encouraged to bring lunch and a beverage. Wellness Day offered to seniors The senior ministry of Saint Paul R.C. Church will host a Wellness Day on Saturday, May 5. The event will begin with morning coffee at 9 a.m. followed by speakers on topics including holistic health, tai chi, physical therapy, spiritual health, and more. Wellness Day will be held in the church’s all-purpose room at 187 Wyckoff Avenue. Refreshments will be served. Freewill donations are welcome. RSVP to (201) 327-0976. Teen author holds book signing, reading The Friends of the Ramsey Library is a volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing programs for adults and children at the library. Stapleton to address gardeners Celeste Stapleton will present “Fauna in the Flora: Deterring Critters in Your Garden” to the Ramsey Area Garden Club on May 8 at 6:45 p.m. The club meets in the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer at 55 Wyckoff Avenue in Ramsey. Stapleton specializes in edible and native landscaping and is a consultant and practitioner of medical herbalism. She studied landscape design at the Bronx Botanical Garden’s School of Horticulture. She has co-managed a certified organic herb and produce farm in Sussex County and is employed at Rohsler’s Allendale Nursery in Allendale. Friends hold reorganization The annual reorganization meeting of the Friends of Ramsey Library will be held on Monday, May 14 at 10 a.m. in the program room at the library. The slate of officers proposed for 2012-14 includes: Marilyn Taylor, president; Doris Latham, vice president; Leann Lydon, treasurer; and Sandra Grande, secretary. Deptula also explained at that time that the school board decided to offer the higher salary increases to compensate for the additional time teachers might have to spend at meetings and for the full versus half school days when Back to School Night is scheduled. According to information provided by the MEA, however, its members will be paying 35 percent of their health care insurance cost within the next three years and, in its last contract agreement, the MEA agreed to change to a lesser health insurance plan, which saved the district $1.2 million. The MEA also claims its members pay 6.5 percent of their annual salaries toward their pensions. Mediator
