Ramsey Review
Volunteer ESL tutors sought The Ramsey Public Library is seeking volunteers to teach English to speakers of other languages. The English as a Second Language program allows people from various countries to learn English or improve their English speaking, reading, and writing skills. There is currently a great need for volunteers as several prospective ESL students are now on the library’s waiting list. The program matches each student with a volunteer tutor and the two work one-on-one once a week for one hour. Volunteers are trained through the Pascack Valley Literacy Volunteers, based at the Westwood Library, 49 Park Avenue in Westwood. The upcoming Tutor Training Workshop will meet on Thursdays, April 5, 12, 19, and 26 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Registration is limited. Garbage collection
(continued from page 5) advised that the increase in solid waste pickups for the additional two months of the year will cost the township $11,166 per year, which represents the difference between the original bids by Suburban for twice-a-week and oncea-week pickups. Mahwah Mayor William Laforet acknowledged that the weather in April and May is unpredictable, but he said, “It’s worse now when it warms up and the garbage just stinks.” He added, “We were able to return back to the community one of those services that obviously is important.” Laforet said it was logical to adjust the plan for pickups because the smell of the garbage is more noticeable in the warm weather and it makes sense in light of the mild weather this year. “That makes our decision look all the more beneficial,” Laforet said, “because of what we can expect in terms of the temperature this year, but I think it’s important for families generating any volume of garbage because it smells. If we can restore at least two months and make it a better world we’re going to do it.”
