Volunteer to be an ESL tutor at the public library The Ramsey Public Library is seeking volunteers to teach English to speakers of other languages. The English as a Second Language program allows people from various countries to learn English or improve their English speak-
ing, reading, and writing skills. There is currently a great need for volunteers as several prospective ESL students are now on the library’s waiting list. The ESL program matches each student with a volunteer tutor and the two work one-on-one once a week for one hour. Volunteers are trained through the Pascack Valley Literacy Volunteers, based at the Westwood Library. Training workshops are held periodically, and training is free for those who will be tutoring at the Ramsey Library. A vital asset to the Ramsey community, the tutoring program fosters understanding and appreciation of other cultures and new friendships. Several get-togethers are held at the Ramsey Library for tutors throughout the year. An International Dinner held in Westwood is held at the end of the year, where tutors meet their counterparts from all over Bergen County and taste cuisine prepared by students from all over the world. For further information, call Ellen Smith or Betsy Trum at the Ramsey Library at (201) 327-1445. The library is located at 30 Wyckoff Avenue.
Team supports Special Olympics
(continued from page 3) According to the Special Olympics New Jersey website, the Special Olympics aims to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Athletes are encouraged to pursue physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and share their gifts with others. The football tournament is played over two days. The Competitive and Recreation Division, in which Ramsey participated, played March 3. A COED and Recreation Division played on March 4. Registration was limited to the first 80 teams. Teams of up to 15 players are allowed, and all must be 18 years of age or older to participate. The field is 20 yards by 40 yards, and each team was guaranteed three games on the field at MetLife Stadium. Food and locker rooms were provided for all players. Each day, competitors had an opportunity to win signed New York Football Giants merchandise. “It was for such a worthy cause,” Chief Gurney said of the experience. “We all had a great time, and it was nice being on the field where the Giants and Jets play.” Gurney noted that some Snow Bowl competitors had come up from Maryland to help support the cause. He explained that nearly all the members of the Ramsey team have played football at some level, from grade school through college. Asked if they would consider participating again in 2013, Gurney said, “We would play again next year, but we would practice and get into game shape.” Although he runs every other day, the chief noted that football requires the use of different muscles, and he would train accordingly. Ramsey’s PBA also participates in the Torch Run, another annual fundraiser for Special Olympics athletes.
