Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • June 13, 2012 Mahwah School board candidates will run unopposed by Frank J. McMahon As of the June 5 deadline, three candidates filed nominating petitions for the three Mahwah Board of Education seats that will be available in the Nov. 6 general election. Incumbent trustees Christine Davis and John F. Dolan filed along with John Ebanietti, who will be seeking election to replace Candace Larson. After five terms on the school board, Larson decided not to seek reelection. The nominating petitions had to be filed by the date of the primary election as a result of the school board’s vote earlier this year to change its annual school board election to the date of the November general election. The school board opted to make the change to a November election in accordance with a new state law, which permits boards to eliminate the need for a public vote on their budgets if they move their elections to the general election for a period of at least four years. No budget votes are necessary as long as the spending plans remain within the state-mandated cap. The new terms of those school board trustees who are elected in November will become effective on Jan. 1, 2013. Davis has lived in the township for 18 years and has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Ramapo College. She is seeking her fourth term on the school board, where she has served on the Finance, Facilities, Public Relations, and Executive/Planning committees. She has also been the board’s liaison to the Thunderbird Scholarship Committee and to the Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools. She has also been the president and vice president of several Home and School organizations and she has been a religious education teacher at the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Dolan currently chairs the school board’s Finance Committee and is a member of the Facilities Committee. He is a long-term trustee, having been appointed in October 1992 to serve an unexpired term on the board that lasted until 1995. He was elected again in 2000 and has since served four consecutive terms. He is currently seeking a fifth consecutive term. Ebanietti, the former president of the Mahwah Raiders Soccer Club, is a new candidate for the school board, although he has lived in the township for 18 years. He has two daughters who are student athletes at Mahwah High School. His wife Lori teaches in the Wyckoff schools. A 1982 graduate of Boston College, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics, he is the senior executive vice president of the private wealth division of the World Bank of Canada. Mahwah Museum’s Old Station Museum and Caboose, located at 1871 Old Station Lane in Mahwah, will be open on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. through Oct. 28. Admission is $3 for an individual and $5 for family groups. Children under age 12 are admitted free. For more information, visit www.mahwahmuseum.org. The Old Station Museum was built in 1871 and moved to its present location by the Mahwah Historical Society in 1965. Shortly thereafter, it was opened as a museum and has been continuously in operation ever since. The Mahwah Museum Society, as successor to the historical society, now operates the venue. The station was a vital part of the history of Mahwah. Farmers were able to ship their products to a larger market, the community Museum, caboose open through fall could provide recreation for summer visitors, and commuters could reach their workplaces in New York City. The station features a small operating model railroad and displays of many other items from the railroad’s history. The 1929 caboose was brought to the site and refurbished as a museum, where visitors learn about the importance of the caboose as a nerve center of each train and a place for the crew to relax. The Mahwah Museum at 201 Franklin Turnpike will remain open on Wednesdays and weekends from 1 to5 p.m. through June 30 and on Sundays through July 29. Exhibits include “Les Paul in Mahwah: A Tribute,” “New Jersey Fights in the Civil War,” and the Donald Cooper HO-scale Model Railroad.
