Newell, a long-time Upper Saddle River resident and a Saddle River Valley Lions member since 1983, has received the Melvin Jones Fellowship. This honor is conferred upon persons who demonstrate practical application of the Lions’ motto: “We serve.” Newell has served as president, vice president, director, and lion tamer in the Saddle River Valley Lions Club. He received a plaque and lapel pin from Peter Lacovara, 2010-11 president of the club. As a Melvin Jones Fellow, Newell has become part of an international network of recipients spanning over 180 countries worldwide. Newell is the 25th member of the Saddle River Valley Lions Club to have received this most distinguished recognition. This honor recognizes an individual’s commitment to helping others to lead richer, fuller lives, and one who embodies traits generally associated with humanitarian service, such as generosity, compassion, and concern for others. Newell was born in Syracuse, New York and raised in Mahwah. He attended Ramsey High School and was a champion wrestler at the county and state levels. As a student/wrestler at Colgate University, he won second place in the NCAA’s 175, 182, and 191 pound weight classes. He graduated from Colgate in 1958, and was inducted into the New Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2009. Newell moved to Upper Saddle River 29 years ago, when he married his wife, Bea. He has two children, Peter and Cory, from a previous marriage. Newell’s wife urged him to get involved in the community, and he opted to join the Saddle River Valley Lions Club. He was sponsored by Karl Montick. Over the years, he has enjoyed the camaraderie with his fellow Lions. He also likes the idea of scheduled commitments for meetings and various Lions functions.
