Township’s schools receive annual report cards
by Frank J. McMahon The New Jersey Department of Education has issued reports cards for the six schools in the K-12 Mahwah School District for the 2010-11 school year. The NJDOE releases report cards for each public school in the state on an annual basis. Those report cards have provided the public with information about every school in New Jersey since 1995, when the state legislature mandated the annual accountability report. NJDOE claims the report cards provide user-friendly information to the public about school performance. In addition, the report cards provide useful data to educators and school districts to help develop local improvement plans. The report cards contain detailed statistical profiles of all the public schools in the district in the areas of school environment, student information, school performance, staff information, and district financial data. Some of the statistical data follows. A complete listing of all the statistics for all the schools in the township can be found on the Internet at http://education.state.nj.us/rc. During the 2010-11 school year, enrollment at the high school was 1,063.5 students, an increase of 55.5 students over the previous year. The average class size was 22.1 students while the state average was 19.1 students. The High School Proficiency Assessment test results indicated that, in language arts literacy, where 251 students were tested, 95.3 percent of the students were at or above the proficiency level. In mathematics, where 251 were tested, the percentage was 91.2 percent. The comparable averages in the state were 90.5 in language arts and 76.2 in mathematics. The 2010-11 average SAT scores at Mahwah High School were 572 math, 532 verbal, and 552 essay, combining for a total average SAT score of 1656. The high school’s previous year’s total average SAT score was 1641. In 2010-11, 59.2 percent of the students in grades 11 and
12 participated in the Advanced Placement tests. The state (continued on page 20)
