May and Monteith shared how well the Ramsey School District prepared them for college. Manzo thanked both graduates for visiting and and giving back to the program. The Ramsey Board of Education recently announced the appointments of an interim superintendent and two school principals. Bruce W. De Young, who retired as Ramsey’s superintendent of schools at the end of 2005, will return to his former post, while the district continues its search for a permanent replacement for Dr. Roy Montesano. Montesano will be leaving the district at the end of the current school year. Dr. Michael J. Thumm, the guidance director at Ramsey High, will begin serving as principal of that school. Thumm will replace Richard Lio, who is also completing his final year in the district. Stacie A. Poelstra, who is currently the social studies supervisor for grades K-12 and world languages supervisor at Ramsey High School, has been named principal of the Eric S. Smith Middle School. She will replace Dr. Richard Weiner, the current principal at Smith School, who will become director of curriculum and instruction effective July 1. De Young received A.B. (summa cum laude) and M.A. degrees in mathematics from Montclair State University, and pursued graduate studies in educational administration at William Paterson University, Jersey City State College, and Teachers College at Columbia University. He is certified in the State of New Jersey Interim superintendent, two new principals named as a school administrator, principal, supervisor, and secondary school mathematics teacher. He has served as a math instructor at Montclair State University, William Paterson University, and at Bergen Community College. He taught math and computer science at Indian Hills High School in Oakland from 1968 to 1979 before he became math supervisor for the Ramsey public schools. He served Ramsey as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction from 1984 through 1991, after which time he became the district’s superintendent of schools. He remained in that post from January 1992 through December 2005. Thumm is a graduate of Paramus Catholic High School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Rutgers University, a master’s in counseling and personnel services from Fordham University, and a doctor of education in instructional leadership from Saint John’s University. He also holds a master’s in educational leadership from Ramapo College. He has been director of guidance for Ramsey’s students in grades six through 12, and has been serving a principal internship at Ramsey High since September 2011. In the latter role, he has been involved in planning and executing the new schedule, (continued on page 16)
