Sophie W. Capik, nee Wasylyk, formerly of Ramsey and Carteret, died May 26. She was 87. She resided for many years in the Ramsey Senior Citizen Housing. She is survived by her daughter Gloria Capik and son-in-law Vasyl of Ramsey, and two grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband George. Arrangements were made by Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home in Ramsey. Richard S. Chesney of Ramsey died May 26. Arrangements were made by Robert Schoem’s Menorah Chapel in Paramus. Mary Lou Conway of Midland Park, formerly of Wyckoff and Franklin Lakes, died May 24. She was 82. Before she retired, she taught for 14 years in California and for 26 years in the Wyckoff Public Schools. She was a parishioner of Saint Elizabeth’s R.C. Church in Wyckoff, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Wyckoff. She is survived by her niece Anne Greer of Midland Park, and her nephews John Sanders of Plano, Texas, Patrick Sanders of Oakland, and Joseph Sanders of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was predeceased by her siblings Sister Jane Conway, OP; Constance (Conway) Sanders; Sister Ann Marie Conway, OP; Daniel Conway; and her nephew Paul Sanders. Catherine Alles Eppley of Ridgewood died May 24. She was 90. After graduating from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City, she worked for CBS, pre-TV. She had been a secretary to several principals at Ridgewood High School. Along with her husband, she directed and produced the Parish Plays at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Ridgewood. She is survived by her children her Suzanne of New York, John of Haverhill, Massachusetts, Mary of Concord New Hampshire, Barbara of Ridgewood, Katy of New York City, Paul of Ridgewood, Michael of Hawaii, and Nancy of Goshen, Connecticut, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas, her son Thomas, and the relatives on her side of the family. Arrangements were made by Feeney Funeral Home in Ridgewood. Mardo N. Hamilton Jr. of Mahwah, formerly of Waldwick and Islip, New York, died May 30. He was 85. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. She was a graduate of Trenton State College, and worked as a teacher and later as an elementary school librarian for the Radburn School in Fair Lawn for 33 years. She was a parishioner of Saint Anthony’s R.C. Church in Hawthorne. She is survived by her children Marisa Martell of Glen Rock and Janette Kreinberg of San Diego, California, five grandchildren, and her siblings Dominic Zambella of Mays Landing, Francis Zambella of Brick, Anna Demski of Pennington, and Angela “Babe” Phillips of Lexington, Kentucky. William “Bill” James Nigro of Denton, Texas, formerly of Upper Saddle River and Sedona, Arizona, died May 28. He was 83. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Before retiring in 1993, he worked as a purchasing agent in packaging design development for Revlon in both New York City and Phoenix, Arizona. He was a member of the Saddle River Lions Club and was a volunteer with the Upper Saddle River Ambulance Squad for many years. He is survived by his wife of Margrit (nee Wildbrett), his children Karen Cavan, Edward Godek, Barbara Avagnano, and Charlotte Marggraff, seven grandchildren, and his siblings Doris and Richard Nigro. Pharmacy for 34 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Rosary Young Men’s Association in Passaic. He has participated in the budgeting, policy, student discipline, and staffing discussions, and assisted with building emergency plans. Before he became director of guidance in 2007, Thumm was a guidance counselor at Ramsey High, a post he held from 1996 through 2007. Poelstra received a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in education from Montclair State University. She is certified as a supervisor and as a principal. She began her work as social studies supervisor for grades K12 in September 2002, and became world language supervisor for grades 9-12 in September 2011. She previously served as a social studies teacher and team leader at Smith School, and taught social studies at Ramsey High. She taught Advanced Placement U.S. History II from 2005-11, and served as a mentor supervisor for the NJExcel Program from 2010-11. She is a co-leader of the 21st Century Learning Initiative, a leader of the World Challenge Program, and a participant in the eighth grade iPad Initiative. She has served as president of the Ramsey Supervisors’ Association since 2006. The district is currently in the midst of a cycle of retirements that will affect the leadership of at multiple school buildings. Tisdale School Principal Dr. Susan Morton and Dater School Principal Michael Gratale have already retired. On July 1, Gina Aliano, who is currently serving as principal at Washington School in Hawthorne, will become principal at Tisdale. The same day, Andrew Matteo, who has been serving as principal of Central School in Glen Rock, will begin leading Dater School. Matteo is a Ramsey native and attended Dater. Dr. Montesano, his administrative team, and board of education’s Personnel Committee, are working to ensure a seamless transition.
