Township reorganization sessions result in changes
by Frank J. McMahon The Mahwah Council’s January reorganization meeting resulted in the selection of a new council president and new legal representation. Changes were also made at the planning board’s recent reorganization session. As the governing body reorganized, Councilman John Spiech was nominated and appointed by the council to be its president by a 5-2 vote. The council had defeated a prior motion to reappoint Councilman John Roth to that position. Council Members Samuel Alderisio, Lisa DiGiulio, Charles Jandris, Harry Williams, and Spiech voted for Spiech’s appointment, while Council Members Roy Larson and Roth voted against it. Roth’s nomination was defeated when Alderisio, DiGiulio, Jandris, and Spiech voted “no,” while Larson, Williams, and Roth voted in favor of the nomination. Williams was reappointed as the council’s vice president by a unanimous vote of his peers. “I want to thank my fellow council people who voted for me,” Spiech said after his appointment. “I know what a big responsibility it is and I am here to serve the people of Mahwah.” Williams said, “I want to thank my fellow council people for their confidence in voting for me.” Both Williams and Spiech thanked Roth for his service as council president. In addition, the council reappointed Jandris as the council’s representative on the planning board and Louis Mai as the township’s auditor. Williams will continue to be the council’s liaison to the board of education; Alderisio will continue as liaison to the Senior Citizens Advisory Board; Roth will continue as liaison to the to the township’s Cable Television Committee; and DiGiulio will continue to represent the council on the Bergen County Community Development Committee.
