YMCA hosts World Service fundraiser The Ridgewood YMCA will host “Gotta Have Heart,” a fundraiser to support its World Service Program, on Friday, Feb. 10 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Woman’s Club of Ridgewood, 215 West Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood. The evening will include a wine and cheese tasting, hors d’oeuvres, auctions, and music. Since 1986, the Ridgewood YMCA World Service has worked with YMCAs in other countries such as Haiti, Kenya, Senegal, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic to provide assistance and support in times of crisis and need. Larkin to discuss ‘Flight of the Earls’ The Irish American Unity Conference, Chapter 5th and 9th CD, will meet Jan. 11 at Christ Church, 105 Cottage Place in Ridgewood, at 7:30 p.m. Joan Larkin, a retired teacher from Ridgewood and an instructor with the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Bergen Community College, will discuss “The Flight of the Earls.” This major event in 1607 was devastating for Ireland’s Gaelic traditions and aspirations, subsequently changing the course of Irish history. All are welcome. The IAUC is a human rights organization working for peace with justice in a reunited Ireland. Hours will be 1 to 4 p.m. each day. The re-enactors are hoping for snow to add to the realism of their living history portrayal of the hardships encountered by soldiers in the Civil War. In addition to the outdoor displays, there will also be indoor exhibits of Civil War artifacts, and engaging hands-on activities for families with children. Entry to the encampment is $7 and includes all Civil War programs and access to the inside of The Hermitage. Museum members and children under six will be admitted free. Braving the winter tional youth gardening program is run by the Rutgers University Cooperative Extension 4-H Network and comprises curricula designed to allow youth to explore their world through meaningful horticultural and environmental science activities. Participants will learn where food comes from, with a concentration on vegetable and herb gardens; how to choose, plan, plant, and harvest a garden plot; nutrition in the garden; materials to make using your harvest; and how to care for plants. Learn about A-Files Christopher Zarr, an education specialist at the National Archives in New York City, will offer a discussion on the Immigration and Naturalization Service’s A-Files at the Jan. 23 meeting of the Genealogical Society of Bergen County. Zarr will discuss the types of documents that can be found in an A-File and how to request them. The Immigration and Naturalization Service began issuing each alien an alien registration number in 1940. Wyckoff Family YMCA holds Annual Meeting The Wyckoff Family YMCA will hold its Annual Board Meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 8 a.m. in Y’s Performing Arts Center at 691 Wyckoff Avenue in Wyckoff. The Y will mark its 30th Anniversary at the Spring Lake campus in 2012, which will be the focus of a special presentation. Also on the agenda is the launch of the Y’s 2012 Strong Kids Campaign along with an overview of missions and goals for the coming year. The meeting will also include the swearing in of officers, and election of board members. A light breakfast will be served and the public is invited to attend. Program on knee pain offered The Northwest Bergen Regional Senior Center, located at 46-50 Center Street in Midland Park, will host orthopedic surgeon Dr. William Carney on Jan. 18 at 12:30 p.m. Dr. Carney will discuss the causes of knee pain, including arthritis of the knee.
