All programs are free, and seating is provided on a “first come” basis. Concerts begin at 2 p.m. at the library, which is located at 100 Ridge Road. Celebrate Mardi Gras with a Feb. 19 Dixieland Jazz Concert with Dr. Dubious Dixieland Jazz Band. This jazz band has been performing in New Orleans and Chicago styles in the tri-state area since 1998. The band has presented summer concerts in Teaneck, Bergenfield, River Edge, and New York City; appeared at street fairs and parades; and performed at benefit performances for relief of Hurricane Katrina victims. Vocalist Laura Hull will present “Marquee Melodies: The Music of the Movies” on Feb. 26. Hull, with piano and bass accompaniment, will celebrate the Academy Awards and the music of Hollywood films in her retrospective of rarely heard movie music by the great masters of American songwriting who composed for the soundtracks of the silver screen. Ramapo College hosts Italian Film Series Ramapo College of New Jersey is presenting its Spring Italian Language Film Series. Screenings are set to begin this week. Featured films represent classics by internationally known Italian directors and more recent productions. Admission is free and open to the public. All of the films will be shown at 6:30 p.m. in Room ASB-136 in the Anisfield School of Business. A discussion will follow each screening. The schedule includes: Feb. 22, “Il Gattapardo” (“The Leopard,” 1963), directed by Luchino Visconti; March 7, “Il Conformista” (“The Conformist,” 1970), directed by Bernardo Bertolucci; March 28, “Una Giornata Particolare” (“A Special Day,” 1977), directed by Ettore Scola; April 11, “Mio Fratello e Figlio Unico” (“My Brother is an Only Child,” 2007), directed by Daniele Luchett; and April 25, “Pranzo Do Ferragosto” (“Mid-August Lunch,” 2008), directed by Gianni De Gregorio. The films are shown in conjunction with the Italian cinema course taught by Professor Giuseppe Sorrentino. New programs for seniors announced The Mahwah Senior Center will offer new workshops during February. Seniors are invited to an acrylics art class with Ralph Clark on Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. On Wednesdays, aerobics for body toning will be offered at 11 a.m. A Stretch and DeStress class will be available at 9 a.m. on Thursdays. Elks host Valentines Party The Mahwah Elks, 1 Foxwood Lane in Mahwah, will host a Valentine Dinner Dance on Saturday Feb. 18 from 7 to 1 p.m. In addition to food and refreshments, the Lost Horizon Band will entertain with blues, country and classic rock music. Library offers programs for adults During the month of February, the Mahwah Public Library will offer a variety of programs for adults. Programs, which begin at 7 p.m., are free. Seating is provided on a “first come” basis. Some of the greatest works of Mozart will be presented by Mozart specialist and pianist, Catherine Sprague, on Feb. 29. Sprague’s program, “Mozart Masterpieces,” will include “Jupiter Symphony,” “Piano Concerto in D minor,” and music from “The Marriage of Figaro” and “The Magic Flute.” Sprague is a member of the Mozart Society of America and author of a forthcoming book about Mozart. Library offers free e-reader lecture Owners of e-readers are invited to learn about the Mahwah Public Library’s e-reader services on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. The program will be held in the Winter Room. Attendees will receive instruction on how to download and transfer the library’s e-books to their e-reader devices, such as the Kindle, Nook/NookColor and iPad. General questions about e-books and the library’s ebook services will be answered, but staff will not be able to troubleshoot e-reader devices. Registration is not required, but seating is limited. Church to host Pancake Supper The Ramapo Reformed Church will hold a Pancake Supper on Friday, Feb. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $6 for adults, and $3 for children under age five. Tax assistance offered The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program will be available at the Mahwah Public Library, 100 Ridge Road in Mahwah, on Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. The VITA Program offers free tax help to those with low-to-moderate income who need help in preparing their tax returns. Certified volunteers will assist in preparing basic state and federal tax returns throughout the tax season. Register at the library’s reference desk. Every effort will be made to accommodate walk-ins. Book discussion groups meet In February, the Evening and Morning Book Discussion groups at the Mahwah Public Library, 100 Ridge Road, will discuss James Weldon Johnson’s “Autobiography of an ExColored Man.” This selection was originally written anonymously in 1912. On Feb. 22, Professor Ellen Dolgin will be on hand to lead the evening discussion beginning at 7 p.m. The morning group will meet on Feb. 27 at 10:30 a.m. Both the Evening Book Discussion Group and the Monday morning group welcome new members. Civil War artifacts sought The Mahwah Museum Society, based at 201 Franklin Turnpike, will mount a special exhibit from March through June to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War. The museum is seeking artifacts for this special exhibit.
