Waldwick Band performs new composition The Waldwick Band will premiere “Music for a Carousel,” a new composition by John Centennaro, on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. at The Village School, 100 West Prospect Street in Waldwick. The program will feature a flute solo by Annette Baron. Centennaro, a member of the band’s clarinet section, has previously composed marches for the Waldwick Band’s 50th Anniversary and for the Hanover Wind Symphony’s 25th season. The band, under the baton of Edmund A. Moderacki, will play selections from the overture from Verdi’s “Nabucco” and Donald Hunsberger’s arrangement of Civil War era music, “Echoes of the 1860s.” The program also includes John Higgins’ salute to the great swing bands of the 1940s, “Big Band Spectacular,” Samuel R. Hazo’s “Solas Ane,” and Miklos Rosza’s “Parade of the Charioteers” from the score of “Ben Hur.” Marches by Edwin Franko Goldman and John Philip Sousa will complete the program. Carreras to discuss Peace Corps Charles Carreras, professor emeritus of Latin American Studies at Ramapo College, will present “The Peace Corps at 50” to members of the Mahwah Museum on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. The program will be held in the education building at the Ramapo Reformed Church, 100 Island Road in Mahwah. From 1963-65, Carreras was a Peace Corps volunteer who was assigned to a community development program in Guatemala City. The program will include photos from his time in Guatemala. Applications for scholarship contest available Applications for the New Jersey League of Municipalities Louis Bay II Future Leaders Scholarships applications are now available. The scholarship opportunity is open to high school juniors and seniors on a statewide basis. Applicants will write an essay about “What My Mayor and Governing Body Do for Me.” Winners will receive awards of $1,000. The 500-word essay should focus on the responsibilities and importance of elected and volunteer civic officials in municipal government, and should raise awareness of municipal government in general. Students interested in applying for the scholarship should contact the municipal clerk in their town for an application. The deadline for the application and essay is March 9. The New Jersey League of Municipalities will announce the statewide winner on May 4. Club presents ‘Non-Essential History’ Dr. James P. Kane will offer a presentation of absolutely “Non-Essential History” at the Feb. 15 luncheon of the Woman’s Club of Ridgewood. The program will be held at the clubhouse at 215 West Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood. Dr. Kane, a former teacher, prep school headmaster, principal, and superintendent of schools, is currently an adjunct professor of education at William Paterson University. Among many honors, he is a recipient of The Governor’s Medal: New Jersey’s highest honor in education. The Volunter Center of Bergen County recently collected over $3,000 worth of clothing, toiletries, and gift cards. These items will be distributed to homeless veterans. The collection was part of a national campaign associated with the Martin Luther King Day of Service to assist veterans, and was the single largest donation of goods ever received by the Bergen County Veterans Service. Since 1993, tens of thousands of dollars in clothing has been given to homeless veterans. To make a donation, call (201) 336-6325. Family Fun Day on Sunday, Feb. 12, from noon to 4 p.m. at 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood. Parents and children can experience firsthand what YWCA Summer Camps have to offer, enjoying food, fun, and the chance to meet and ask questions of camp staff. The YWCA runs four fun and affordable summer camps for children ages three to 16: Small Fry Camp in Ridgewood, Camp Orinda in Dumont, Camp Y-Oak-A in Saddle River, and Camp Ma-Kee-Ya in Bear Mountain, New York. All camps offer trips, events, theme weeks, American Red Cross Swim lessons, sports, arts and crafts, nature activities, and more. CIT programs for boys and girls ages 13 to 16 are also available. RBARI hosts Hawaiian Luau benefit The Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc will hold a Hawaiian Luau fundraiser on Friday, April 20 at the Portobello Banquet Hall, 155 Ramapo Valley Road in Oakland. The event will include dinner, music, karaoke, and a cash prize for the best singer. Island wear is optional. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $50. Call Paula at (973) 427-0605. This location is barrier-free. All proceeds directly benefit the animals at RBARI, the area’s no-kill animal shelter. Opera company holds audition The Ridgewood Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company will hold auditions for “Pirates of Penzance” on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 3 to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 12 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Community Church of Glen Rock, 354 Rock Road in Glen Rock. Auditions are open for principal roles and chorus. Singers should be prepared to sing 32 bars of music from the show or a piece showcasing vocal quality. Performers should bring music if they will not be performing a piece from the “Pirates of Penzance.” An accompanist will be provided. Those who audition should also bring a head shot and resume. Asperger’s workshops offered West Bergen Center for Children and Youth Asperger’s Related Service will offer Saturday workshops for children ages six through nine and 10 through 13. These one-hour workshops provide creative activities such as drawing, painting, and sculpting, and offer opportunities for increased imagination, perspective, and conceptual processing, social interaction, sensory regulation, and motor coordination.
Workshops will be held Feb. 18, March 17, April 21, May 19, June 16, Sept. 15, Oct. 20, and Nov. 17. Children ages six through nine will meet from 11 a.m. to noon and those ages 10 through 13 will meet from 1 to 2 p.m. The fee for the program is $35 and includes all materials.
