Tax assistance offered The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program will be available at the Mahwah Public Library, 100 Ridge Road in Mahwah, on Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m. beginning Feb. 11 and on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. starting Feb. 15. The VITA Program offers free tax help to those with low-to-moderate income who need help in preparing their tax returns. Certified volunteers will assist in preparing basic state and federal tax returns throughout the tax season. Register at the library’s reference desk. Every effort will be made to accommodate walk-ins. Library offers free e-reader lecture Owners of e-readers are invited to learn about the Mahwah Public Library’s e-reader services on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Winter Room. Attendees will receive instruction on how to download and transfer the library’s ebooks to their e-reader devices, such as the Kindle, Nook/ NookColor and iPad. General questions about e-books and the library’s ebook services will be answered, but staff will not be able to troubleshoot e-reader devices. Registration is not required, but seating is limited. New programs for seniors announced The Mahwah Senior Center will offer new workshops during February. Seniors are invited to an acrylics art class with Ralph Clark on Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. On Wednesdays, aerobics for body toning will be offered at 11 a.m. A Stretch and DeStress class will be available at 9 a.m. on Thursdays. Local bank support schools foundation The Mahwah Schools Foundation has announced it has joined Boiling Springs Savings Bank’s Community Alliance Program, which gives the foundation the opportunity to raise money based on the number of supporters who bank with Boiling Springs. In order for the foundation to receive quarterly donations, foundation supporters need to designate new or existing accounts at Boiling Springs as a Community Alliance participant with the Mahwah Schools Foundation. Sunday Music Series to continue The Mahwah Public Library’s Sunday Music Series will include a variety of performances in February. All programs are free and seating is provided on a “first come” basis. Concerts begin at 2 p.m. The All Seasons Chamber Players with Guest Pianist Steve Beck will perform “Vive La France” on Feb. 5. The concert will include Leclair’s “Trio Sonata in D Major;” Faure’s “Dolly Suite for Piano Duet, Op.56,” Poulenc’s “Sonata for Flute and Piano,” and Ravel’s “Trio in A Minor for Violin, Cello and Piano.” On Feb. 12, celebrate the romance of February and Valentine’s Day with the great love songs of Broadway when tenor Richard Koons, soprano Robin Lounsbury, and pianist Russell Wagoner perform “My Romance.” Koons merits acclaim for both his leading and comic roles in theaters across the United States and Europe. Lounsbury, a coloratura soprano, is a multifaceted performer of opera, operetta, and musical theater works. Wagoner is a pianist, coach, and conductor. Celebrate Mardi Gras with a Feb. 19 Dixieland Jazz Concert with Dr. Dubious Dixieland Jazz Band. This jazz band has been performing in New Orleans and Chicago styles in the tri-state area since 1998. They have presented summer concerts in Teaneck, Bergenfield, River Edge, and New York City; appeared at street fairs and parades; and
performed at benefit performances for relief of Hurricane Katrina victims. Vocalist Laura Hull will present “Marquee Melodies: The Music of the Movies” on Feb. 26. Hull, with piano and bass accompaniment, will celebrate the Academy Awards and the music of Hollywood films in her retrospective of rarely heard movie music by the great masters of American songwriting who composed for the soundtracks of the silver screen. Library offers screening of ‘Dolphin Tale’ The Mahwah Public Library, located at 100 Ridge Road in Mahwah, will offer “Dolphin Tale,” a family matinee movie, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. In an inspiring story of the bond between animals and humans, a boy named Sawyer discovers an injured dolphin that is brought to a marine hospital. When her injuries cost the dolphin her tail, Sawyer’s devotion, a marine biologist’s expertise, and the brilliance of a prosthetics expert charged with creating a new tail, give the mammal a second chance. The movie is rated PG, and runs 113 minutes. Popcorn, movie snacks, and drinks will be provided. The program is free. No tickets are necessary. Seats will be available on a “first come” basis. Influential fictional characters to be discussed Co-authors Dan Karlan and Jeremy Salter will present “The 101 Most Influential People Who Never Lived” Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Mahwah Public Library, 100 Ridge Road. The authors will offer an amusing presentation about each of the 101 fictional characters they deem to be the most significant in American cultural history. Among the great invented luminaries are Icarus, Santa Claus, Don Juan,
King Kong, Jim Crow, Luke Skywalker, Sherlock Holmes, G.I. Joe, Captain Ahab, Alice, Hamlet, HAL 9000, Mary Richards, Bambi, the Marlboro Man, Big Brother, and Archie Bunker. This program is free. Registration is not required. Seats will be available on a “first come” basis. Church to host Pancake Supper The Ramapo Reformed Church will hold a Pancake Supper on Friday, Feb. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $6 for adults, and $3 for children under age five. To purchase tickets, call the church office at (201) 5293075. Tickets will also be sold at the door on the day of the event. The church is located at 100 Island Road. Knitting group welcomes new members Beginner and advanced knitters are invited to join the monthly knitting circle, Knit One, Drop In, at the Mahwah Public Library. Crocheters are also welcome. The group, which is committed to knitting with a purpose, may send finished projects to Save the Children, Covenant House, or U.S. Troops. Yarn is provided and instruction is available. Attendees should bring size eight knitting needles. Registration is not necessary. The group meets the fourth Saturday of the month at 3 p.m. Upcoming meeting dates are: Feb. 25 and March 24.
