Motorists would then have had to make a U-turn to travel north on Route 17 or proceed to Franklin Turnpike. Kelly said Ramsey officials objected to that plan, and the NJDOT decided to keep the bridge open to one narrow lane in each direction during construction. Kelly said he agreed with that decision. “Our preference is to maintain two-way traffic on the bridge during construction,” the engineer explained. No trucks or pedestrians will be permitted to cross the bridge during the construction period, Kelly said, but emergency service vehicles will be able to traverse the bridge during the project. He added that the NJDOT would have to confirm whether school buses would be able to cross the bridge during construction because of the width of the lanes. He assured the council that the school district would be notified as to whether school buses could use the bridge during construction.
