Chamber President Rob Tilton encourages a large turnout for this event. Young bowlers wanted Registration is open for the Ramsey Recreation Commission’s bowling program. The program, which meets at Holiday Bowl in Oakland on Fridays, will begin Sept. 14. Students in kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to join. Bumper bowling is available for younger children. The cost is $65, and registration forms are available in the municipal building, 33 North Central Avenue Ramsey, and online at www.ramseynj.com under the recreation tab. Annual Dog Show seeks entrants The Thirteenth Annual Dog Show, which is sponsored by the Ramsey Recreation Commission, will be held Sunday, Sept. 9. Participants will meet at the municipal pool on East Oak Street at 2 p.m. This event will feature the leash-led obstacle course designed by Recreation Commissioner John Sebastian. In addition, dogs may be entered in competitions for best costume, best trick, cutest male and female pets, largest and smallest dogs, and best distinguishing feature categories. The registration fee is $5 per category per dog. Pre-registration is suggested. Registration forms are available at the Ramsey Municipal Building, 33 North Central Avenue, or online at www.ramseynj.com. Forms will also be available the day of the show. Extended Day Program available The Ramsey Extended Day Program, which is offered under the auspices of the Ramsey Adult School, offers before and after school care services to children in the Ramsey District Schools at Tisdale, Hubbard, and Dater schools. In addition, the program offers a homework study center at the Smith Middle School specifically for students to work on homework in a supervised setting after school. Staff members participate with the children in homework club, sports activities, crafts, and special programs. Now in its fourth year, the program is looking to expand the RED staff. Rimmer to discuss plant propagation The Ramsey Area Garden Club will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 6:45 p.m. at the Church of the Redeemer, 55 Wyckoff Avenue in Ramsey. Laurel Rimmer, assistant director of the public programs at Wave Hill, will discuss fall and winter plant propagation. Rimmer holds a master’s degree in landscape architecture from Cornell University. Library to close for holiday weekend The Ramsey Public Library, located at 30 Wyckoff Avenue in Ramsey, will be closed Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 1, 2, and 3. On Sept. 4 the library will resume regular hours: Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Church to host ‘Girls on the Run’ program This fall, the First Presbyterian Church in Ramsey will offer “Girls on the Run,” an exciting new program for girls in grades three through five. This afterschool program taps into the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Girls choose and conduct a community service project, and train to walk or run in a 5K (3.1 miles). The Ramsey girls’ run is scheduled for Nov. 10. Participants will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 10 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 15 Shuart Lane in Ramsey. Program topics will include dealing with body image and media, resisting peer pressure, dealing with bullying, making healthy decisions, and the importance of teamwork and community. Trained coaches help prepare the girls to be physically, mentally, and emotionally stronger and better prepared to overcome the challenges and pressures of adolescence and beyond. Girls on the Run of New Jersey is an affiliate council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of over 140 chapters across the United States and Canada. Seniors announce annual picnic The Ramsey Seniors will hold a “Picnic at the Pool” on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at noon. This annual event features food, fun, and special contests. Sign up at the borough hall, 33 North Central Avenue, during business hours. The cost is $5 per person, and checks should be made payable to Ramsey Seniors. All borough residents over age 60 are invited to attend. This active group hosts a variety of activities at the seniors’ Finch Park location. A trip committee plans many daytime excursions throughout the year. Anyone who wishes to participate in event planning may attend a meeting on the second Wednesday of each month at 4 p.m. Farmers Market open The Ramsey Farmers Market is open each Sunday at the Main Street train station from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The market abounds with fresh, local, seasonal produce, and other products. Artisanal breads and cheeses, coffees and teas, gourmet olive oils, free range eggs, local honey, gluten-free baked products, organic prepared foods, wines, and other products from over 35 vendors are available.
