This fall, the First Presbyterian Church in Ramsey will offer “Girls on the Run,” an exciting new program for girls in grades three through five. This afterschool program taps into the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Girls choose and conduct a community service project, and train to walk or run in a 5K (3.1 miles). The Ramsey girls’ run is

Rabbi David J. Fine, PhD, spiritual leader of Temple Israel and JCC in Ridgewood, will be the featured speaker at a Publication Party to celebrate his new book, and chapters he wrote in a recently published volume from the Rabbinical Assembly, the international professional association of Conservative rabbis. The gathering is slated for Sept. 9 from 10:30 to noon at the synagogue at 475 Grove Street in Ridgewood. Rabbi Fine will read excerpts from his groundbreaking work, “Jewish Integration in the German Army in the First World War,” and his two chapters, “Taxation” and “Marriage,” in “The Observant Life,” a comprehensive guide for Jewish living today, as understood by the Conservative branch of Judaism. In “Jewish Integration in the German Army,” through letters from the front,

diaries, memoirs, tombstone inscriptions, photographs, military service records, and more, Rabbi Fine offers a compelling portrait of Jewish officers serving as proud Germans. His argument leads to the conclusion that anti-Semitism was not a primary factor in their WWI wartime experience. Must citizens pay taxes under any circumstances? In the eyes of Jewish law are you a “bad” person if you put your money into a numbered Swiss bank account? When is it okay to marry someone of another race? Who is the ultimate “matchmaker,” according to Jewish tradition? Is there a right time to become parents? These are among the questions Rabbi Fine explores with compassion and insight in “The Observant Life.” For details, call (201) 444-9320, e-mail office@synagogue.org, or check the synagogue’s website at www.synagogue.org.
