Road closure announced Local motorists are advised that road work is planned for North Monroe Street between Smith Place and Jackson Terrace in Ridgewood. PSE&G will be replacing sections of the road following damage to a section of underground electric infrastructure. Work is expected to begin on Wednesday, Aug. 22 and should be completed on or about Friday, Aug. 24. No work is planned for Saturday or Sunday. Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Traffic will be detoured to Fairmount Road and local police will be on the scene. The road will be reopened to traffic after 4 p.m. each work day. Motorists are reminded to slow down and be alert when driving past the job site. Nobel Prize winner to discuss global warming The North Jersey Public Policy Network Distinguished Expert Series will present a talk by Dr. Kevin Trenberth, senior scientist for the National Center for Atmospheric Research, climate analysis section, on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Trenberth’s program, “Global Warming: The Future Outlook,” will take place at the Ridgewood Public Library, 125 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. Dr. Trenberth will discuss his observations and the science of climate change caused by human activity, the potential environmental and socio-economic consequences, and options for adapting to or mitigating the effects of climate change. A question and answer session will follow. Dr. Trenberth led the intergovernmental panel on climate change to win the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for the Scientific Assessment of Climate Change Reports. He is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and the American Association for Advancement of Science and the American Geophysical Union. Genealogical society to meet The Genealogical Society of Bergen County will meet on Monday, Aug. 27 in the Ridgewood Public Library, 125 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood. League moves forward
Members of the League of Women Voters of Bergen County, including Vice President Barbara King, board members Irma Leeds and Evelyn Auerbach, President Lucy Heller, and board member Linda MacNamara, discuss the 92nd Anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment. After almost a century of campaigning, the 19th Amendment was approved, providing women with the right to vote. This spurred the founding of the League of Women Voters, whose members provide nonpartisan information about issues and candidates throughout the country via local leagues. One of the ways league performs this service is through the sponsorship of candidates’ debates. The league is now planning three debates that will be held this fall. The co-sponsor will be Bergen Community College.

Senior events announced Ridgewood’s David G, Kennedy, a veteran of five decades in the theater, will perform “Hughie,” a one-act play by Eugene O’Neill on Aug. 15 at 12:30 p.m. in the art room of the Northwest Bergen Regional Senior Center, 4650 Center Street in Midland Park. The play takes place during the summer of 1928 in the lobby of a West Side hotel as Eric Smith, a small-time hustler, laments to the hotel night clerk, Charles Hughes, how his luck has gone bad since the death of Hughie, the previous night clerk. Admission is free. Those who wish to attend this program are encouraged to call the center to reserve a spot. Seating is limited. On Aug. 29, the seniors will travel to Sands Casino in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The cost of the trip is $25 per
person. The casino bonus includes $20 in slot play and a $5 food voucher. All participants must have valid government issued photo identification to receive the casino bonus. The trip will depart from the municipal parking lot on (continued on page 22)
