On July 20, Catherine Viggiano, 51, of Waldwick, was arrested and charged with a third degree theft by deception. Superior Court of an incident that occurred where a cash transaction received by the court was never deposited. On April 24, the Ramsey Police Department was advised that the Bergen Vicinage Municipal Division was investigating possible theft in the Ramsey Municipal Court Office. Upon completion of the Bergen Vicinage Municipal
Division investigation and findings, the Ramsey Police Department commenced a criminal investigation. This criminal investigation has determined that between the dates of Nov. 2, 2009 and Sept. 27, 2011, Viggiano would accept cash fees and generate hand-written receipts either by her, or other court personnel on some court transactions. Some of the fees that were accepted in this manner were never deposited. In every theft instance, Viggiano was the court employee who handled the transaction. At this point in the investigation, police have 13 separate instances detailed and a total amount of thefts of $1,904. Detective Sergeant Robert Novakowski, the lead investigator, presented his investigation to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. It was determined that Viggiano be charged with a third degree theft by deception. The case will be forwarded to the Grand Jury of Bergen County where additional charges may be added. Viggiano was issued a complaint summons and was released on her own recognizance. A first appearance date will be announced.
