Hirschberg took home a silver medal for coming in second in the Legend Men Series Giant Slalom Alpine event. All of the racers beat their personal goals competing against the best riders from all over the country.
Mahwah’s municipal budget
(continued from page 6) due to decreased valuations of existing housing, anticipated revenues from new commercial development projects did not occur in the time expected, recent municipal employees’ contracts caused an increase in payroll expenses, and storms caused increased overtime expenses. According to Bagatelle, Mayor Laforet asked the panel not use any net funds from surplus when making the 2012 calculations in order to maintain a significant cash level to provide for a cushion and satisfy all requirements for the bond rating agencies. Those agencies have upgraded Mahwah’s bond rating to a rating of AAA, which could save the township $400,000 to $500,000 over the remaining term of the township’s debt. The panel also suggested that the township’s surplus fund be replenished to a safer level of $5 million to $6 million in the next few years and recommended that the surplus not be used to balance budgets in the future. Bagatelle complimented the mayor for his leadership and prudence in putting forth the budget on time with the lowest municipal tax increase in 11 years and the first projected increase in surplus in many years. “This is just the beginning of a process to ensure that the Township of Mahwah remains financially secure for many years to come,” Bagatelle said, adding that the panel unanimously recommended that the council approve the 2012 budget without changes. Laforet thanked the members of the panel, whom he described as “moms and dads and residents who are interested in the community.” He said, “It speaks to the extraordinary type of people we have in this community and our relationship will continue in the future.”
