Ramsey April 11, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 9 Ramsey’s incumbent Republican council members, Deirdre Dillon and William Jones, will run unopposed in the June 5 primary. No Democratic council candidates have filed for their party’s primary. Councilwoman Dillon, and her husband, Hugh McDonald, are 18-year Ramsey residents and are raising their three children in Ramsey. Dillon is presently completing her sixth year as a Ramsey councilwoman and is serving her second year as the borough’s public safety commissioner. She is also liaison to the library board. In 2009, she served as council president. During her service to the council, Dillon has chaired the Utilities, Buildings & Grounds Committee, the Building, Planning & Zoning Committee, the Public Health, Education, and Social Services Committee. She was also a member of various committees, including Finance and Administration. The councilwoman served as liaison to Ramsey Board of Health, the Design Review Board, the Ramsey Shade Tree Commission, the board of education, the pool commission, and the senior center. Dillon received a bachelor’s degree in accountancy from New Mexico State University, and a J.D. from New York Law School. Dillon and Jones file for June 5 GOP primary In the community, Dillon has taught CCD at Saint Paul’s Church, served as an assistant coach for the Ramsey Soccer association, and was a member of the Junior Woman’s Club of Ramsey. She is currently chief compliance officer and counsel to a registered investment adviser. Jones is a 14-year Ramsey resident who is raising three children in town. He is currently serving his sixth term on the council. He has served as chairman of the Health, Education & Social Services Committee, the Public Safety Committee, and the Public and Governmental Relations Committee. He has served on multiple committees, including Finance and Administration. Jones has also served as liaison to the Ramsey Environmental Commission, Ramsey Drug Alliance, Ramsey Fine Arts Council, the Ramsey Shade Tree Commission, the Ramsey Board of Health, and the Ramsey Board of Education. The councilman earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from William Paterson University. He is currently director of operations for Englewood Tire Wholesale. This year, Republican Jeffrey Heller will seek a seat on the Ramsey Republican County Committee in District 3. Heller is challenging Douglas Rennie, who is running with his wife, Emily Rennie. The committee seeks one male and one female member from each of the borough’s voting districts. The addition of two new voting districts in the borough has expanded the opportunities for those who wish to serve on the county committees. With the addition of Districts 7 and 8 this year, Richard Daul filed for Republican County Committee in District 7 and Abbas Safai and Katherine Safai filed for seats in District 8. Democratic candidates who have filed for their party’s county committee organization include Francis Kelaher and Mary Ann Cary in District 1 and Louis Moore in District 4. A chief function of the county committees is exercised when a member of the council resigns in the middle of his or her term. The county committee organization associated with the resigning council member’s political party is charged with providing the council with the names of three prospective candidates from the same party, and the council selects a new member. The Ramsey Public Library, located at 30 Wyckoff Avenue in Ramsey, will hold two writing workshops for novice and experienced writers. The programs will be held on April 19 and May 17 at 7 p.m. The roundtable of writers will be led by local author Valerie Gross. The group will read, write, and discuss writing. All aspects of the craft will be addressed, from Writing workshops offered at library how to sit down and get to work to how to turn a simple sentence into a thing of beauty. This is not a critique group. No editing will be done in class. Participants will listen and offer suggestions and support. The program is free and registration is not required.
