Church-wide sale set Fardale Trinity Church, located at 73 Chapel Road in Mahwah, will hold a church-wide sale on April 20 and 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sale will include many items bargain prices, baked goods, and a café sponsored in part by the Culinary Institute of America. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Haiti Youth Mission trip and Hosean International. Adult softball registration set On April 25 and May 10, Mahwah Recreation will hold registration for newcomers to the adult softball program. Registration will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the recreation building located at 70 East Ramapo Avenue. Players must be at least 21 years of age, provide proof of residency, and remit a $25 fee. The season will begin June 18. Men will play on Mondays and Wednesdays, and women will play on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Library holds Book Sale The Mahwah Public Library will hold a Book Sale Monday, April 16 through 21 at the library located at 100 Ridge Road. The sale will feature a large selection of fiction and non-fiction books for adults and children. Large print books for adults will also be available. Series to feature New Jersey’s State Parks The Mahwah Museum will present historian and raconteur Kevin Woyce in an April 12 lecture entitled “New Jersey State Parks.” The program will be held at the Ramapo Reformed Church, 100 Island Road, at 7:30 p.m. The presentation includes photos, vintage maps, and images of historic people, places, and events. Old names such as Wawayanda and Hopatcong remind visitors of the Lenni Lenape. Historic battlefields recall New Jersey’s perilous years during the American Revolution. Abandoned forges still speak of the first great industry. Beginnings of the transportation network can be traced in the paths of the Morris and the Delaware & Raritan Canals. Board of health to meet The Mahwah Board of Health will meet on Tuesday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mahwah Municipal Building, 475 Corporate Drive. Scouts hold Kids Night Out Girl Scout Bergen Travel Group will host Kids Night Out on April 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lenape Meadows Elementary School. Children ages three through 10 are welcome, and must be out of diapers and pull-ups. The eve-
ning will include movies, games, snacks, and activities for the children. The high school-age Girl Scouts are Red Cross babysitter and first aid certified. Troop parents will also be on hand to supervise. The cost is $12 per child. Proceeds will help the Girl Scouts raise funds for educational travel opportunities in California, Alabama, and Europe. Tax assistance offered The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program will be available at the Mahwah Public Library, 100 Ridge Road in Mahwah, on Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. The VITA Program offers free tax help to those with low-to-moderate income who need help in preparing their tax returns. Certified volunteers will assist in preparing basic state and federal tax returns throughout the tax season. Register at the library’s reference desk. Every effort will be made to accommodate walk-ins. Pool offers reduced rates for early subscribers Registration for the Township of Mahwah Municipal Pool will open in April. Reduced membership rates are available to those who register by April 30. Application forms will be mailed to all residents and former pool members the first week in April. Additional applications are available at the municipal building at 475 Corporate Drive. The Mahwah Pool welcomes non-residents, who may call the pool for application forms or pick them up at the municipal building. Library offers programs for adults The Mahwah Public Library offers a variety of free programs for adults. Seating is provided on a “first come” basis. Bob Malgieri will present “Pruning Pointers” on Wednesday, April 11 at 7 p.m. Malgieri is a tree and shrub manager for Borst Landscape and Design. On April 15, vocalist Shirley Crabbe will present “The Incomparable Ethel Waters” at 2 p.m. Celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month with the songs made famous by America’s first black superstar. Waters was a woman of the theater, a celebrity, and an influential singer whose distinctive jazz singing and interpretive abilities have been credited with influencing several of America’s greatest vocalists. Crabbe studied voice at the Manhattan School of Music and, in the evening, traveled downtown to sing in the clubs. She has performed at Birdland, the Paramount Theater, and opened for jazz icon Abby Lincoln. Barbara Brandes will present a program on the “Job Search in the Age of the Internet” on Tuesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. Over the past decade some elements of the job search process have changed, and the internet is one of them. Brandes’ talk will cover researching occupations and jobs online, and preparing a computer-friendly resume. Brandes
specializes in career and executive coaching. She has been a career advisor at Monroe College School of Business and Yeshiva University, and has been director of career counseling at Sarah Lawrence. On April 18 at 7 p.m., John Zinn will offer “New Jersey Baseball: 1855-1870.” New Jersey base ball (two words in those days) clubs played an important part in the early days of the national pastime. The presentation will feature the state’s prominent players and clubs, and how the game has evolved. Zinn, chairman of the board of the New Jersey Historical Society, has been active in the founding of New Jersey’s third vintage base ball team, the Newark Eureka. He is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research. The library is located at 100 Ridge Road in Mahwah. Chamber holds networking event The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce will hold a Business After Hours networking event for Chamber members and non-members at Oritani Bank on Wednesday, April 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. Oritani Bank is located at 161 North Franklin Turnpike in Ramsey. Refreshments will be available. Oritani Bank is a community bank with over $2 billion in assets that has been serving customers for over 100 years. Headquartered in Washington Township, Oritani has 25 branches throughout Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Passaic counties. The event is $15 for Chamber members and $30 for nonmembers. He said he would like to join the board and take on the challenge of keeping the Ramsey schools up to the very high standards that have been set. The candidate said he enjoys problem solving, and believes his business expertise will transfer effectively to the school board. Snyder, a 32-year resident of Ramsey, has been a trustee for 18 years and has served on every major board committee. He is a graduate of Northeastern University and his two children are graduates of the Ramsey school system. Snyder has been an active member of the Bergen County School Boards Association Executive Committee, the New Jersey School Boards Association Board of Directors, the School Finance Discussion Group at Rutgers, Our Children/Our Schools, and Dackks Group, a supportive housing program. He is a former executive director of Dollar$ & Sense, an education advocacy organization. Ramsey is one of a handful of local school districts that decided to retain an April school trustee and budget vote. This year, a new state law provided school districts with the option to move their elections to November and eliminate the public vote on the school budget provided the associated tax levy increase remains at or below the state-mandated cap, which is now two percent.
