Page 14 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • September 26, 2012 The Waldwick Volunteer Ambulance Corps is making its 60th anniversary this year with a celebration at Borough Park as part of the Waldwick Lions Club Fun Family Day on Sunday, Sept. 30. A dedication ceremony of the corps’ newest ambulance is scheduled for 1 p.m. The public is invited. Family events will follow, including a variety of demonstrations. Ten members of American Legion Post 57 started the volunteer corps in 1952 to fill a community need. Men had to be legionnaires in order to join the corps, but a drop in enrollment forced opening up membership to the community at large in the late 1960s, according to Carmella Morey, the organization’s historian and at 86 its oldest member. Morley joined in 1965, and after 47 years is still involved in Ambulance corps celebrates 60th anniversary administrative duties. Henry Folano was the first non-legion member to join the organization, which now has 20 active members on its roster. Women were admitted in the early 60s. The first ambulance was kept at the post home on Franklin Turnpike, but as more sophisticated equipment required bigger vehicles, a new home was needed. The Borough of Waldwick came through with a site for the new headquarters behind Fire Company No. 2 on Wyckoff Avenue. Fred Cenno took on the job of fundraising for the new building. State grants were secured for the project, including one to fund the second floor meeting room for the use of the Golden Club. That room above the two garages is now available for rental to residents or organizations. The corps not only offers medical transportation in emergencies or when otherwise needed but also keeps on hand a supply of wheelchairs, crutches and walkers to lend out on a temporary basis. Members are active with monthly training exercises and in mutual aid activities with other towns. To join members have to take a 240-hour EMT certification course and must recertify every three years. A special luminary ceremony is planned at Memorial Walk in front of the public safety building on East Prospect Street in Waldwick this Sunday, Sept. 30, to mark Gold Star Mother’s Day. The moving tribute is being sponsored by the Waldwick Mayor and Council and the members of American Legion Post 57 and VFW Post 1049. The community is invited to join in at 7 p.m. to honor the women who lost a child serving in the military. The luminaries will be lit during the program. The American Legion will be selling the flame-resistant luminaries during the Lions Club’s Ducky Derby/Family Fun Day earlier in the day at Borough Park for those who wish to display them on their home sidewalks or driveways that evening or regularly. Proceeds will go towards erecting a memorial monument on the great lawn in Washington, DC. After the 7 p.m. ceremony, all are invited to the American Legion Hall on Franklin Turnpike for dessert.
