Page 12 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • September 26, 2012 The Waldwick Public Library will celebrate the opening of its new meeting room and local history archives on Saturday, Oct. 6, beginning at 10 a.m. Waldwick Library Director Patty Boyd welcomes the public to view the expanded facilities and to participate in the festivities. The bump-out addition to the east side of the building, which features similar stone and window details as the existing building, increased the size of the library’s meeting room from 625 square feet to 1,175 square feet. The existing meeting space was converted into a multi-purpose room that will provide storage space for local history materials, and serve as a conference room and an area for quiet study. The 10 a.m. dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony will be followed by an 11 a.m. Magic and comedy show for children starring Stretch the Silly Man. (Please note that admission to see Stretch will be limited to Waldwick resi- Library to host Grand Opening Celebration dents.) Join the Mad Hatters for balloon sculpting from noon to 2 p.m., and stay for the 2:30 p.m. concert by Rave On! This performance will feature the music of Buddy Holly. Due to the bump-out method of construction, there were no interruptions to the library’s service to the public. The building did not close down, and no off-site storage was needed. A total of $400,000 was allocated for the improvement project. Before the project was officially approved by municipal officials, the library already had over half of that amount available in its capital account. A large portion of that funding consisted of a $100,000 estate gift from J. David Kamykoski, Boyd’s predecessor who retired in 2001 after 25 years of service to the Waldwick Library. The library also raised over $118,000, much of which has been gained through the proceeds from the library’s passport program. That program took off in 2007, when travelers to the Caribbean were required to carry a passport. Since that time, the library’s convenient passport program has been inundated with requests. A donor board, which was installed in 2010, raised additional funds for the project. Tiles were engraved to honor or memorialize someone, and then placed on the board. Funds were raised by the Friends of the Waldwick Library, and a $100,000 contribution came from the borough’s capital improvement fund. Earlier this year, the project stalled, but the bond company stepped in and took over for the original contractor. The new room is now ready for the public. The Waldwick Public Library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. For additional information, call (201) 652-5104. The Waldwick Community Alliance has solidified its upcoming fundraising schedule with four events planned for the coming months. WCA Vice President Doug Cowie said that his organization continues to shy away from estimating a total cost for the project due to the often unforeseen nature of historic preservation work. “In the mean time, fundraising will continue,” he said, urging residents to place the WCA plans fundraisers as Phase II restoration starts dates on their calendar and plan to support them. Beefsteak & Silent Auction – Saturday, Nov. 17 at Guardian Angel Church in Allendale. The dinner will be catered by the Brownstone and the Silent Auction will include sports and entertainment memorabilia. Wine Tasting Event – Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013 at Guardian Angel Church in Allendale. This is always a well-attended event with over 100 wines, craft beers, gourmet chocolate and great food. Win A Dream Vacation – Sunday, April 28, 2013 Win $3,000 towards a vacation anywhere in the world. Raffle tickets will be only $20. Annual Car Show – Sunday, June 2, 2013 This is one of the WCA’s most successful events, which keeps growing every year featuring hundreds of beautiful cars, live music, food, and fun for kids and the whole family. Sponsorships - The WCA is now looking for area businesses to sponsor its events. Sponsorships range from as little as $100 and go up to $1,500 with great benefits offered, including great exposure while helping the community. Additionally, since the WCA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, any contribution is fully tax deductible. Interested businesses should call Doug Cowie at 201-873-8919 for more information. Cowie reported that Phase I of the station is expected to be completed within the next two weeks. Shortly thereafter, he said, Phase II will begin, starting with replacement of all four exterior doors and the restoration of all 19 windows. Other exterior items will include repair of any damaged siding and trim and prepping for paint. This, of course, will be weather dependent. During the winter the work will move indoors and begin electrical, lighting and flooring along with interior wall and ceiling repairs. Due to multiple issues with the previous contractor on the job, the WCA is close to hiring a new contractor who has already been approved by the Bergen County Historic Preservation Advisory Trust Board. This makes for a quicker transition between phases, according to Cowie. “We are very much looking forward to working on the goal of opening the Waldwick Historic Museum,” he said.
