Casino Night set Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church will host a Casino Night on Saturday, Oct. 20. The event will be held in Fellowship Hall located at 96 East Allendale Avenue in Saddle River. Friends and family are welcome to attend. The evening will feature table games, slot machines, food, wine, and prizes. Tickets are $50 when purchased in advance. At the door, tickets will be $60. To purchase tickets, call (201) 327-0655. Library offers programs for adults The Upper Saddle River Library offers a variety of programs for adults. The programs are free, but registration is required as seating is limited. The library is located at 245 Lake Street in Upper Saddle River. On Oct. 1, a costumed historical interpretation, “Maizie Brews a Business,” will be presented at 1:30 p.m. This one-woman performance examines women’s changing roles at the turn of the 20th century. The dramatic monologue is set in 1925 and features Maizie Stanton. Stanton will discuss her plans and the challenges she faces as she joins the Tea Room Craze and ventures outside her traditional role. Refreshments will be served. This program is offered through
the Horizon Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. “It’s All in the Details: Gardening Program” will be presented on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. Garden details and ornamentation to create drama, texture, and focus in a landscape, will be the topic of discussion. The program will feature photos from public and private gardens to demonstrate garden details including water features, fountains, decorative walls, and paving choices. On Oct. 4, “Step in or Step Aside: Knowing When and How to Intervene (or Not) in Your Child’s Challenges” will be offered at 7:30 p.m. Fern Weis, a certified life coach who specializes in educating and supporting parents of tweens and teens, will offer advice on being an effective and trusted adult to teens. Participants will also learn how to help children become confident and self-sufficient. To register for any of these programs, call (201) 327-2583. Book groups to meet On Oct. 10, the Novels at Night book discussion group will meet at the Upper Saddle River Library to discuss Oliver Sacks’ “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat.” The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month. On Oct. 11, Coffee Talk will discuss “Girls of Murder City” by Douglas Perry. The discussion will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Coffee Talk meets on the second Thursday of the month. Copies of the books are available at the circulation desk at the library, which is located at 245 Lake Street in Upper Saddle River. Club hosts Wine and Cheese Soiree The Saddle River Valley Residents Club will host its annual Wine and Cheese Soiree on Saturday, Oct. 6. This will be the season’s first evening event for the organization, which was previously known as the Saddle River Valley Newcomers Club. The organization is open to residents of Saddle River, Upper Saddle River, and neighboring towns. To attend the wine and cheese party, contact Louise at (201) 934 1228 or president@srvrc.org. Upcoming events include: Oct. 13, a Sociable Supper; Oct. 16, morning coffee at the USR Library; and Oct. 20, a family event to Field Station: Dinosaurs in Secaucus. On Nov. 17, the annual holiday dinner dance, “Giving Thanks Holiday Ball,” will be held at The Brownstone. Information about all these events will be provided in a monthly newsletter.

Woyce to discuss Jersey Shore Author and photographer Kevin Woyce will present a history of the Jersey Shore to the senior group of the Church of the Presentation on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Woyce will discuss the history of the Jersey Shore from the distant past of pirates and shipwrecks through the founding of today’s summer resorts. Learn why there is an elephant-shaped building in Margate, how towns got their unusual names, and more. This program will feature slides and photographs. The author will be available to sign copies of his book, “History of the Jersey Shore.” The 9:45 a.m. meeting will be held in the community room of the church located at 271 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River.
